Somatic Based Dance Classes:

The Somatic-based classes are designed to support dance training by broadening the students awareness of the body and its capabilities. The courses are valuable for non-majors, dancers of all levels and styles, body workers, and for students interested in dance therapy and the mind/body connection.

D 153 - Pilates - 2 Credits

Prerequisite: none
Introducing basic Pilates mat work exercises and techniques.

D 154 - Pilates 2 - 2 Credits

Prerequisite: none
This class covers Pilates mat work exercises and techniques. Previous Pilates experience recommended.

D 172 - Dancing theFluid Body - 2 Credits

Prerequisite: None
This course explores the concepts of Continuum Movement, a somatic approach to understanding the body and its capacities. Specific breath and sound techniques will be introduced to stimulate the fluidity of the body. Students will explore wave motion and spiral movements varying from subtle micro-movements to dynamic full-bodied expression. Discussions of the body in relation to culture, anatomy, and ecology will be springboards for movement explorations.

D 176 - Fluid Yoga - 2 Credits

Prerequisite: None
This class will explore yogic techniques and philosophies as they relate to dance technique, performance techniques, and the creative process. Yoga postures, breathing and meditation techniques which support the development of creative and performing artists will be introduced and explored. The history of Yoga and its evolution into Western culture will be examined.

D 183 -  Body/Mind Stretch and Relaxation - 2 Credits

Prerequisite: None
Students increase knowledge of anatomy and through guided stretch and relaxation exercises, heighten awareness of their body and its integral relationship to their mind. Among other benefits, this course improves posture, flexibility and placement ability for dance. Class is repeatable up to 12 credits.

D 199 - Special Studies - Contact department for information on current topics.

D 199 includes a variety of dance classes, including Authentic Movement, Body-Mind Centering, and Continuum.

D 256 - Body as Knowledge/Body Fundamentals - 3 Credits

Prerequisite: One year of dance in Fundamentals, modern, or ballet or a movement discipline such as yoga, sports or athletic training.
This course is designed to introduce students to musculoskeletal systems as they impact the potential for human movement in a variety of dance idioms and everyday activities. Repatterning theories of Laban Movement Analysis, Bertenieff Fundamentals, and Body-Mind Centering will be applied to study of  Anatomy and Kinesiology. A required class for dance majors and beneficial class for those interested in enhancing body knowledge from an experiential and scientific approach. May be used to meet arts and letters requirement for the AAOT and satisfies a University of Oregon dance major prerequisite.
