Constitution Day Celebration
at Lane Community College

October 5, 2005

What is Constitution Day?

Most Americans know that July 4th is our nation's birthday. Far fewer Americans know that September 17th is the birthday of our government, the date in 1787 on which delegates to the Philadelphia Convention completed and signed the U.S. Constitution.

The ideas on which America was founded--commitments to the rule of law, limited government and the ideals of liberty, equality and justice--are embodied in the Constitution, the oldest written constitution of any nation on Earth.

Senator Robert Byrd of West Virginia accomplished a long-standing goal, passing a law designating September 17th as Constitution Day. Schools and federal agencies are required to hold educational programs on the Constitution on Constitution Day.

Lane's Activities:

On October 5, 2005, Lane Community College will be paying tribute to the Constitution with a campus wide Constitution Day Celebration. There will be discussions about the current relevance of the Constitution. There will be movies about the history of Constitutional issues. There will also be a debate between the LCC debate team and a debate team from the U of O. In addition, we will be holding exciting events like; Dunk the Delegate where Constitutional figures will be ready in a dunk tank, a Federalist vs. Anti-Federalist water balloon fight and a cherry pie eating contest. Come join the festivities and learn something, have some fun and maybe even get some extra credit.
