Science instructor Melissa Kilgore wins fossil naming contest

Sammy the Sabertooth SalmonLane biology instructor Melissa Kilgore won the UO Museum of Natural and Cultural History's recent contest to name their sabertooth salmon fossil. The oncorhynchus (smilodonichthys) rastrosus specimen, part of the museum's new Explore Oregon exhibit, now is known as Sammy the Sabertooth Salmon. As a reward for her creativity, Melissa will be visiting the museum's fossil collection vault. "I am avid fossil collector," she says, "so this is the perfect prize." Want to learn more? The Explore Oregon exhibit is open to the public Tuesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information about the fossil, visit: http://natural-history.uoregon.edu/collections/web-galleries/saber-toothed-salmon
