May 3, 2017 Jim Grandstaff

EUGENE, Ore. - Celebrate Cinco de Mayo with Springfield High School band Mariachi del Sol on Thursday, May 4 on the Center Building Plaza at Lane Community College main campus, 4000 E. 30th Ave. in Eugene. The concert will be held from 2:30-3 p.m. Tasty Mexican snacks will be provided courtesy of the student group MEChA (Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán) and the Multicultural Center from 12-4 p.m. or until they last.

Cinco de Mayo commemorates the victory of the residents of Puebla over the invading French at the first Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. Mariachi music is a folk music native to western Mexico that features many different types of guitars (guitar, guitarron, vihuela), as well as violin, trumpet, and soaring vocals. The Springfield High School mariachi ensemble is a powerhouse of youth talent led by Chris Holt.

The event is sponsored by the Lane Community College Multicultural Center, MEChA, Learning Commons, and Library.
