December 2003 Highlights

FACULTY RECOGNITION AWARDS for 2003/04 were announced in surprise classroom visits to Mark Harris, Counseling and Social Science; Gary Mort, Science; Mary Skoda, Math; and Patrick Torelle, Music Dance and Theater Arts. The awards recognize teaching excellence and contributions to the college vision and core values. The instructors will be publicly honored at graduation.

LARRY DAVIS received the Federal Aviation Administration Charles Taylor Master Mechanic Award. The award acknowledges mechanics with 50 or more years of aviation maintenance service. Davis taught aviation maintenance at Lane from 1966 until his retirement in 1988 and continues to guest lecture at the college. The award was presented in conjunction with a celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Wright Brothers’ first flight. The Springfield News featured Davis in a full-page profile.

DALE WEIGANDT, volleyball coach, was named Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges Coach of the Year at the all-star game. Earlier in the season, he won Southern Region Coach of the Year and All-Tournament Coach honors. Lane placed third at the NWAACC playoffs, the best finish since joining the NWAACC in 1983.

CHRISTINE MARSHALL was named December Classified Employee of the Month. She joined Lane in October 2000 and is administrative assistant for English as a Second Language at the Downtown Center.

IRENE PARENT passed away November 27. She was a counselor at Lane from 1966 until her retirement in 1982 and was instrumental in establishing the international student program at Lane.

DAVID JOYCE passed away December 3 at age 57 from non-Hodgkins lymphoma. He taught art and media arts at Lane for 25 years from 1976 to 2001. He was a popular local artist with national acclaim and was known for the flying people mural at the Eugene Airport, photo mosaics, and other work. A memorial service was held at Lane.

THE MARKETING AND PUBLIC RELATIONS DEPARTMENT won first-place awards for newspaper and television advertising at the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations District 7 Medallion Awards competition. The department won third place for movie theater on-screen advertising, and participated in a statewide community college marketing campaign that won a first place award. NCMPR is an affiliate of the American Association of Community Colleges.

THE LCCEF (Lane Community College Employees Federation) elected officers for 2004. Serving will be: President Bob Baldwin, Vice President Alen Bahret, Treasurer Bert Ewing; Recording Secretary Linda Allen, Corresponding Secretary Carrol Barton, Membership Chair Mary Binford, Grievance Chair Glenn Goss, and Chief Labor Delegate Danny Avalos.
