November 2007

THE LANE PEACE CENTER debuted with a presentation from media critic, author and documentary producer Norman Solomon on November 15. In addition to a speaker series, the center will hold a peace and democracy conference from February 29 to March 1. A two-year associate degree in peace studies is in development. The center is funded in part by an endowment. President Mary Spilde initiated the peace center concept two years ago and a steering committee has carried on development, led by social science instructor Stan Taylor and conference and culinary director Peg Allison. A WATER CONSERVATION TECHNICIAN associate of applied science degree program was approved at the November board meeting. Classes will begin fall 2008 and through the Energy Management program in the Science Division. The program will train and certify water conservation professionals. The program is self-supporting including grants from the Eugene Water and Electric Board and American Water Works Association. A RETAIL MANAGEMENT associate of applied science degree program was approved at the November board meeting. Classes begin fall 2008. The program will serve students and workers already employed in the industry who want to advance in store supervision and corporate leadership. The training is part of a statewide initiative managed by a consortium of Oregon colleges. Lane will partner with Clackamas Community College in Oregon City to offer second-year classes through distance learning. The state projects 500 jobs in retail management and supervision at an average annual wage of $40,000 plus benefits. More than 40 openings a year are projected in Lane County. Lane currently offers a one-year certificate of completion and a less than one-year certificate. MORE THAN 60 INTERNATIONAL AND AMERICAN STUDENTS at Lane partnered this fall for a weekly hour of conversation to help the international students practice the English language and share cultures. For more information contact Beth Schenderlein at schenderleinb@lanecc.edu

SYLVIA SANDOZ was named Classified Employee of the Month for November. Sylvia has worked as technology analyst and data specialist in Institutional Research Planning, and Assessment since 1995. She joined Lane in 1987 as a computer labs assistant. For the past 10 years she has been a member of Lane's Symphonic Band. JOE MCCULLY, hospitality instructor at Lane since 2003, received the Advanced Communicator Bronze award from Toastmasters International, in recognition of his interest in and commitment to quality communication. McCully is a Certified Hospitality Educator recognized by the American Hotel and Lodging Association. Lane's hospitality management program offers a one-year certificate and a two-year associate of applied science degree. See lanecc.edu/culinary/hospitality.htm for more information.

THE WHITEAKER COMMUNITY THANKSGIVING DINNER was made possible by broad volunteer participation from Lane staff and students. The dinner fed 2,500 people and provided 800 pounds of potatoes and other food. Volunteers included culinary arts chef instructors Clive Wanstall and Chris Crosthwaite, food services manager Brian Kelly, and Culinary Arts students. Lane's participation was coordinated by Cooperative Education service learning coordinator Beverly Farfan. Other staff donated funds or materials including 250 sleeping bags and 150 blankets for community members.
