November 2005 Highlights

LANE JOINED A NATIONWIDE EFFORT TO ELIMINATE ENERGY WASTE through the voluntary implementation of improved energy management practices and technologies in a partnership with Energy Star, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's voluntary program that promotes energy efficient solutions to help save money while protecting the environment. Lane is the second college in Oregon to partner with Energy Star. As a partner, Lane agrees to monitor and measure its energy performance and to promote increased energy efficiency at its Florence, Cottage Grove and Eugene locations.

THE LANE COMMUNITY COLLEGE FOUNDATION BOARD OF TRUSTEES elected officers and admitted two new members for 2005/06. President is Dave Frosaker of Wells Fargo Bank. Past president is Jeri Stark of Symantec. First vice president is Larry Hedberg of U.S. Bank. Second vice president is Jim Creech of Northwest Stamping. Treasurer is Lynn Schoenfeld of Kernutt, Stokes, Brandt & Co. Secretary is Tony Baker of The Register-Guard. Newly appointed to three-year terms were Mike Moskovitz, managing regional communications manager, Weyerhaeuser Company; and Pete Gribskov, president and owner, QSL Printing.

THE ANNUAL OREGON SCHOOLS ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION state cross-country meet was held at main campus on November 5. Lane has hosted the state championships since 1971. The event draws 4,500 high school students, their families and others to Lane.

THE WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY TEAM won the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges championship in November, and the men's team finished second.

LANE CULINARY AND HOSPITALITY students and staff, and staff from Food Services and other departments, again provided food and cheer at the Whiteaker Free Community Thanksgiving Dinner. LCC Food Services cooked 2,000 pounds of turkey and almost all the other food that was served to the more than 2,500 citizens who attended the free dinner. Additional Lane staff and students organized or collected donations of warm clothing and bedding and other necessities for dinner attendees.

JIM GARCIA was named interim Chicano/Latino student program coordinator, after five years as the college's diversity coordinator. The appointment creates a new focus on Chicano/Latino student recruitment and retention at Lane. Garcia's community leadership and recognition is expected to facilitate student recruitment, advance the college's diversity goals, and improve service to the community's growing Chicano/Latino population. Garcia also absorbs some responsibilities of outgoing Multicultural Center director Connie Mesquita, who is retiring after 26 years at Lane.

ANNE METZGER of the Health Clinic was named Outstanding Classified Employee of the Month for November. Anne has served Lane since 1982, currently as a medical technologist.
