November 2004 Highlights

BUDGET ASSUMPTIONS for 2005/06 were approved by unanimous vote at the November 16 Board of Education meeting. The assumptions will be updated as new state information is received. PRESIDENT MARY SPILDE was awarded the 2004 Tenison Haley Outstanding Individual Contribution Award in recognition of her leadership in diversity, at the 10th Annual Oregon Diversity Institute held November 5 and 6 at Lane. She was commended for distinguished achievement and inspirational leadership in championing access, social justice and equity with courage, intelligence, empathy and commitment, and for fair and principled leadership that has influenced the lives of students, staff and community members in building bridges and celebrating the richness of our college, community and the state of Oregon. Haley was a diversity advocate and founding organizer of the Institute.

PRESIDENT MARY SPILDE WAS ASKED to consider staying on as president for least another five years, Lane Community College Board of Education Chair Paul Holman reported to the board at its November 16 meeting. He said the board is considering offering incentives to that end. He urged the president to accept a salary increase, which she has not done since becoming president in 2001. Holman and Vice Chair Kathleen Shelley were directed by the board to work on contract details after Spilde earned an outstanding performance review for her third straight year.

BERT EWING was named Outstanding Classified Employee of the Month for November. He is a programmer analyst in the Information Technology department and has worked at Lane 20 years. He is known for his wealth of knowledge, expertise, innovation, and resourcefulness. He is longtime treasurer of the classified union.

THADDEUS BEEBE, Lane flight instructor and a graduate of the flight technology program, will teach flight instruction at a new Pan Am flight training facility in Shijiazhuang, China. He will train pilots to fly for Air China and Hainan Air. Beebe has an associate of applied science degree in flight technology from Lane and a bachelor of arts degree in Chinese language from the University of Oregon.

STEVE CARTER, faculty member in Adult Basic and Secondary Education for more than 14 years, died November 7. He was diagnosed with brain cancer 10 months earlier. He was a highly popular teacher and co-worker.

LANE'S HEALTH CLINIC received the 2004 Golden Gull Award for Clinical Practice from the Pacific Coast College Health Association in recognition of the Strategic Breathing Initiative. Spearheaded by Nadine Wilkes, the initiative was implemented last year to improve provider training in treating asthma and related breathing programs, update equipment for handling breathing emergencies, and foster collaboration of Lane respiratory therapy students and local allergists to provide free screening for staff and students. PCCHA includes public universities, private universities, and some community colleges in British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, California, Idaho, Wyoming, Nevada, and Arizona. PCCHA is an affiliate of the American College Health Association.

LANE WON THREE REGIONAL AWARDS from the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations. Among two-year colleges in the western United States and Canada, Lane won first place for a print ad promoting the Florence Center; first place for the Foundation annual report (designed by a graphic design graduate), and second place for outdoor advertising on LTD buses promoting professional technical programs. Lane's three awards were tops among the 17 Oregon community colleges. NCMPR is an affiliate of the American Association of Community Colleges.

LANE'S PARTNERSHIP WITH K-12 through the Regional technical Education Consortium (RTEC) was explored in a recent Register-Guard article which described how Lane is working with the Crow School District to offer a fundamentals of technology course. The course gives students both high school and college credit and helps make up for the loss of wood and machine shop classes at the high school due to funding cuts.

TWO MAYORS FROM JAPAN, Jun-ichi Shinmura of Kakegawa and Noriyuki Itoh of Osuka, recently visited Continuing Education and English as a Second Language Program. Mayor Shinmura has a grant from the Japanese Ministry of Education to study the U.S. continuing education system and chose Lane because of the Kakegawa-Eugene sister-city relationship.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE CIVICS NIGHT was held for intermediate, high-intermediate, and low-advanced English as a Second Language Program evening students. Eugene Mayor Kitty Piercy, State Rep. Paul Holvey, County Commissioner Don Hampton, and Phyllis Waggoner of Peter DeFazio's office, spoke to the students about government, their roles in government, and topics important to immigrants. The evening civics classes receive federal funding.

LANE FORENSICS STUDENTS recently began the debate tournament season. At the Betsy Karl Designated Tournament in Tacoma, Lane won the Overall Team Sweepstakes Award Third Place, Division III; and Steven "Skippy" Coatsworth won novice impromptu finalist. In the 32nd Annual Smelt Forensics Classic in Longview, Dallas Brown and Sean Gremer were semi-finalists in the Novice Parli Debate; Michael Lichens won second place in open dramatic interpretation, and Steven "Skippy" Coatsworth won novice impromptu finalist.

THE ANNUAL OSAA STATE CROSS COUNTRY MEET was held on main campus November 6 and attracted 4,000 students and spectators. Lane has hosted the meet since 1972.

KEZI NEWS 9 (ABC) featured Continuing Education classes the week of November 15 on its morning news. Classes included jewelry and metal-crafting, veterinary assistant training, gourmet sausage making, appliance repair, and tile setting.
