THE READING TOGETHER PROJECT, a year-long study of diversity issues focuses on two books, “Montana 1948” and Power, Privilege and Difference,” included several events this month. Patrick Torelle’s play based on the novel ran two weekends, and Bonnie Simoa held an open rehearsal for her dance based on the same book. A discussion and reception was held for faculty teaching the books, and Esther Stutzman, Kalapuya elder and storyteller, talked about the Kalapuya people for a general audience.

THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES of the Lane Community College Foundation elected officers for 2003-04: president, David Blewett, Kendall Auto Group; past president, Attorney John Wolf; first vice president, Jeri Stark, Symantec; second vice president, Dave Frosaker, Wells Fargo Bank; treasurer, Larry Hedberg, U.S. Bank. Newly appointed to three-year terms are Kip Much, district manager, NW Natural; Priscilla Ross, general accounting manager, Levi Strauss & Co.; and Jack Roberts, executive director, Lane Metropolitan Partnership.

CERAMICS AND CULINARY ARTS STUDENTS teamed up to raise funds for the Long House project by selling student-made soup in student-made bowls, on November 12. The bowls sold out and netted more than $1,600. The students donated their time and materials. The project was the brainchild of ceramics instructor Erik Land. The Native American Student Association also donated $1000 for the Long House.

DRAFTING STUDENTS may help test new AutoCAD mechanical drafting software developed by a local employer thanks to a partnership with the Drafting Program Advisory committee, according to the Professional Technical Education Coordinating Committee. PTECC regularly reviews Lane’s advisory committees and programs.

AN EMPLOYEE BENEFITS AND WELLNESS FAIR was held November 21. The event provided information on insurance, wellness activities, and other information. The event was organized by Human Resources.

BUDGET ASSUMPTIONS AND PROJECTIONS for fiscal year 2004/05 were approved by the Board of Education. Projections show that Lane is moving toward fiscal stability and will be able to maintain current service levels this year and for the next two years without the major deficits of the past. A deficit is forecast for 2006/07. The projections are available at http://www.lanecc.edu/budget/0405/budget0405.html .
