November 2002 Highlights
THE OSAA CROSS COUNTRY TRACK CHAMPIONSHIPS were once again hosted by Lane's Athletic Department. The November 2 event attracted 5,541 people to main campus, including 802 athletes from 136 different Oregon high schools.
THE RENAISSANCE ROOM, Lane's student-run restaurant, celebrated its 25th anniversary on November 5.
LINDA SIMMONS, executive assistant to the president, was selected as vice president for academic programs at Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland, Ohio. She will begin the position in January. Simmons was director of student financial aid at Lane from 1984-93 and became executive assistant to the president in 1994.
CULINARY ARTS STUDENTS tried out their newest and biggest lab when they catered the Peacemakers Conference on November 13 in Building 19. The day-long conference included workshops for about 300 middle and high school students from around the county. For lunch, Lane students prepared approximately 400 box lunches, 29 gallons of apple and orange juice, 4 gallons of coffee and tea, 4 gallons of water and hot chocolate packets, and 38 gallons of lemonade and fruit punch. They also set up and took down seating and tables. Building 19 is the last major project funded by Lane's construction bond. It features a new state of the art kitchen and conference facilities to provide culinary students with hands-on learning experience. In addition, the building houses workforce training, distance learning, cooperative education, and computer information technology programs.
A POLICY TO ANNUALLY ADJUST TUITION for inflation was approved at the November 13 Board of Education meeting. The policy continues through 2004/05 when it will be reviewed.
A CITIZENS ADVISORY GROUP recruited by President Mary Spilde began meeting November 21. The 22 volunteers will help identify key impacts Lane should have in the community; identify major trends and issues facing the college; and provide suggestions on how to align budget decisions with community needs. Their input will be used to modify Lane's mission and vision and will be used in the annual budget process. The group will meet December 3 and 10, and will schedule two additional meetings in February and March, before disbanding.
BERNICE INGALLS STATON, the patron who gave $2 million to Lane Community College in April 2001 for need and merit scholarships, was honored at a luncheon in the Renaissance Room on November 22. Staton heard from President Mary Spilde and from scholarship recipients. Staton's gift created 20 annual scholarships of $5,000 each, 15 for professional-technical students, and five for transfer students.
