LANE'S BOND received numerous endorsements from 16 organizations and 104 individuals as of October 22. Among the organizations endorsing the bond were the Democratic and Republican Parties of Lane County; Bethel, Eugene and Springfield School Districts; Eugene and Springfield Chambers of Commerce; Lane Council of Governments; Eugene Register Guard and Eugene Weekly; and others. Elected officials endorsing the bond included Eugene Mayor Kitty Piercy, Former Eugene Mayor Jim Torrey, Sen. Bill Morrissete, Sen. Floyd Prozanski, Sen. Vicki Walker, Rep. Terry Beyer, Rep. Phil Barnhart, Rep. Chris Edwards, Rep. Paul Holvey, and Rep. Nancy Nathanson. In addition, many business owners and other individuals endorsed the bond. Extensive news coverage was given to the bond including prominent stories in the Register-Guard, Siuslaw News, Cottage Grove Sentinel, Eugene Weekly, KVAL TV, KMTR TV, KLCC FM Eugene, KNND AM Cottage Grove, and KCST AM Florence. Volunteers with the Lane League and Yes for LCC committee joined President Mary Spilde, Vice President Sonya Christian, who put in countless hours at speaking engagements and campaign events and sponsored Yes for LCC ads and Achieving Dreams ads.
AN OPEN SECTION LOOK-UP TOOL ON THE WEB helped students find open classes the first few days of the term as an enrollment increase swelled demand for services collegewide. The tool was developed by Ron Rourke and Don McNair.
KLCC met its Fall Radiothon goal of $290,000 on the last day of the week-long fundraiser. Two-thirds of KLCC's budget comes from listeners and local businesses.
INTERNATIONAL ESL ENROLLMENT increased 68 percent from 22 students last fall to 37 students this fall. Students come from the United Arab Emirates, South Korea, Hong Kong, China, Brazil, Japan, Burkina Faso, Vietnam, Guatemala, and Tajikistan, including 24 returning and 13 new students.
DANCE INSTRUCTOR BONNIE SIMOA was awarded a Career Opportunity Grant from the Oregon Arts Commission for creation of the duet, "Thirst," by Mary Oslund written for Simoa and Walter Kennedy, a dance instructor at the University of Oregon. "Thirst" premieres in Portland at Imago Theatre November 21-23, and will be performed February 14-16 at the UO, and February 26-28 at LCC's annual Collaborations dance concert.
TERRY STARR was named Classified Employee of the Month for October. Starr has been with Lane since October 2000 as a painter in Facilities Management & Planning. He is Lane's lead painter and is known for innovation, environmental consciousness, and problem solving. His background and knowledge of Native American history and current affairs helped inform the longhouse project about appropriate finishes and products.
LANE WAS FEATURED IN KIWI MAGAZINE again this year in its 2008 Green College Report which recognizes advances in sustainability programs. Kiwi said Lane curbs its toxic chemical use through features such as eco-friendly art studios and integrated pest management systems, while an organic garden and biodiesel processor provide hands-on learning opportunities for students. The online magazine also commended Lane for its Renewable Energy Technician and Water Conservation Technician degrees, and ran a photo of the student learning garden.
