MELANIE DAVIS was named Employee of the Month for October. She works with the Lane Dental Clinic and has been at Lane since 1992.

LANE’S LOCAL OPTION LEVY received editorial endorsements from The Register-Guard (October 2) and Eugene Weekly (October 19).

LANE WON A NATIONAL CAMPUS SUSTAINABILITY LEADERSHIP AWARD from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education, at its October 5 conference. Lane was one of four winners and the only community college to win.

LANE WON THE NATIONAL OUTSTANDING COLLEGE PROGRAM AWARD from the National Recycling Coalition at its October 22 conference.

THE OREGON BIONEERS CONFERENCE was held at Lane October 20-22, one of 17 sites nationwide to connect by satellite to the 17th Annual Bioneers Conference in San Rafael, and to offer local sustainability workshops.

LANE AND HIV ALLIANCE won a $2 million five-year grant from the the federal Health Resource Services Administration to create a model dental clinic for people living with HIV/AIDS. Only 15 grants were awarded nationally and only one in the Pacific Northwest. The grant was written by Aaron Shonk of the Lane Foundation.

LANE’S BOARD unanimously passed a resolution opposing state spending limit Measures 41 and 48, at its October 17 meeting.

PRESIDENT MARY SPILDE was quoted in the national Chronicle of Higher Education story, “A Taxing Plan: Oregon Colleges Prepare for Spending Cap,” October 20, and has been invited to speak at the Chronicle’s business summit next summer to describe how Lane has dealt with disinvestment.

THE READING TOGETHER ORAL STORYTELLING WORKSHOP with James Florendo on October 24 attracted more than 100 people. Florendo coordinates the Native American Student Program at Lane and is an enrolled member of the Wasco Nation. This year’s project theme is “Navigating the Changing Terrain.”

THE HARVEST DINNER sold out with 400 tickets claimed by October 2 for the October 27 fundraiser. The event featured guest chefs Caprial and John Pence of Portland and about 115 Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management program students. It was sponsored by the culinary program and the Lane Foundation.

LANE COMMUNITY COLLEGE won five awards in the Medallion Awards competition at the District 7 annual conference of the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations held in Portland October 25-27. The college won a gold for print advertising series; a silver for the promotional DVD Learn to Earn; and bronze awards for the promotional video/CD-ROM College Now, poster for the high school recruitment poster, and class schedule for Aspire. Judges comments on Aspire included, "This is one of the best schedules I've seen in 30 years."
