October 2002 Highlights

THE CENTRAL TUTOR CENTER held an open house October 1. The center offers free tutoring in writing, business/accounting classes, social sciences, speech, academic learning skills, English as a Second Language, and French and Spanish.

GEORGE ALVERGUE was honored by Board of Education resolution on October 9. Alvergue served on the board from 1999-02 and taught history and political science at Lane for 27 years.

KLCC surpassed its 2002 Fall Radiothon goal in the final minutes of the campaign on October 10. The radiothon earned $236,660 thanks to the support of 3,403 listeners.

THE MID-WILLAMETTE COLLEGE FAIRE was held October 13 at main campus. Representatives from 92 colleges, universities and military agencies participated.

STEVE CANDEE, political science instructor, presented at the Pacific Northwest Political Science Association annual conference to October 17-19 in Bellevue, Washington.

A WEATHER STATION WAS INSTALLED on the roof of Building 16 in early October. The station records current conditions and updates readings every two-and-one-half minutes for posting on the web at http://staff.lanecc.edu/~weather . The station display console is located in the Science Division office.

A BUDGET REBALANCING PLAN was approved by the Board of Education October 21. The plan includes $2.5 million in adjustments which avoid significant impact on students and address 84 percent of an anticipated $3.1 million funding shortfall, should a January 28 state income tax measure fail. If the measure fails, Lane will cut 243 class sections and add a tuition surcharge of $2.50, both spring term only, and spend $150,000 in board contingency funds. The shortfall will be about $1 million if the measure passes. President Mary Spilde held two meetings each with staff and students to provide information, collect feedback and solicit solutions.

THE BOARD OF EDUCATION accepted the resignation of Lucille Salmony from Zone 1, declared a vacancy, and announced a process to seek applicants for appointment, at its October 21 meeting. . Zone 1 covers the western part of the college district. Application deadline was set for November 8 and interviews were set for December 3.

PSC INC. was named 2002 Outstanding Cooperative Education Employer of the Year on October 28. PSC provides hands-on learning experiences for students in the areas of electronics, human resources and accounting, and computer information technology. PSC manufactures and develops scanning and data capture products in Eugene and is headquartered in Portland.
