Monthly Highlights

September 2007

PRESIDENT MARY SPILDE was appointed by the governor to co-chair Oregon's Postsecondary Quality Education Commission. The commission will create a model for postsecondary education for the governor's use in developing the 2009-11 recommended budget. The commission is directed to address the needs of community college and university students; study the impact of the use of part-time faculty and graduate students; identify key values for higher education such as career education; solicit input; consider research; and communicate with stakeholders. Findings should help level the playing field for community college funding in the legislative process.

SILTCOOS STATION Retreat and Learning Center managed by Lane Community College at Florence made the Best of the Oregon Coast list in the Sunday Oregonian travel section on September 2. Read it online at

IN-SERVICE was held September 17. Staff engaged in Ubuntu-inspired projects, from wellness activities to space-heater exchanges to gardening. Read the president’s address online at http://www.lanecc.edu/presoffc/fall2007.htm

FALL TERM CLASSES got off to a smooth start thanks to advance registration and early orientation. Fall welcome booth staff handed out information and popcorn. Main campus parking congestion was relatively low key with spaces available daily in lot N above the baseball fields and no back-up on Gonyea or 30th this year. First-day ExpressLane use logged 6,683 unique logins (i.e., each person counted once no matter how many times they logged in), breaking the old record, set last year, of 6,491—a 3 percent increase. Experience shows that an increase in ExpressLane usage usually is higher than an increase in FTE and headcount. The system performed pretty well under a record load.

CHILD CARE PROGRAMS AND SERVICES were featured in the cover story of the September 2007 issue of Business Officer magazine. The journal is published by the National Association of College and University Business Officers and is distributed nationwide. See it online at www.nacubo.org

COMMUNITY CONVERSATIONS will be scheduled by the Board of Education following a decision at its September meeting to broaden outreach to the community and improve the board’s understanding of the needs of future learners.
