September 2005 Highlights
THE FOUNDATION AWARDED $557,332 in scholarships, grants, stipends and loans to 595 students last academic year. This is a 42 percent increase in amount awarded and a 20 percent increase in student recipients.
FALL KICKOFF was held September 22, the Thursday before classes, to provide new students and their families with the information they need to begin college and understand the resources available at Lane, and to give them a chance to begin building relationships. This was a first-time event.
LANE RECEIVED A CERTIFICATE OF ACHIEVEMENT for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association of United States and Canada. The award is the highest form of recognition in governmental accounting and financial reporting. An Award of Financial Reporting Achievement was presented to Mary Spilde, president, Stan Barker, director of college finance and purchasing, and to the staff of the College Finance department, in recognition of their key roles in financial reporting.
GLENNA CLEMENS, nursing instructor at Lane since 1976, died September 18, one week after she suffered an intercranial hemorrhage. A memorial service was held at St. Paul's Catholic Church on September 23. Glenna helped thousands of students and was as a role model for colleagues.

A COUGAR WAS SEEN on the south edge of campus in the evening near the woods the first week of the term. Cougars have been sighted periodically in this area. Public Safety advised staff to avoid walking the paths alone, and recommended some web sites for information on what to do if approached by a cougar, at cougarfund.org/safety.php.
FOOD SERVICES returned to the use of reusable plates in the cafeteria, in keeping with the college's sustainability program.
JOE MCCULLY, hospitality instructor at Lane since 2003, was recertified as a Certified Hospitality Educator by the American Hotel and Lodging Association. The recertification is based on his years in teaching, operations, and other activities in the hospitality industry.
RICHARD EYMANN died September 26 at age 86. He was government affairs and funding specialist and administrative assistant to the president at Lane from 1966-1975. He also was a former legislator and utility district board member.
