LONGHOUSE construction over the summer included the pouring of the foundation stem walls and the milling of logs into framing lumber and trim. Logs donated by the Coquille Tribe for posts and roof were processed at a mill in Mollala and arrived on site.
A $1,000 COCA COLA SCHOLARSHIP was awarded to Lane student Jessica Rojas from the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation. Rojas is a Student Ambassador at Lane and a moderator of the Life@Lane blog (see www.lanecc.edu and click the Life@Lane link).
BOARD LEADERSHIP AND OUTREACH. Pat Riggs-Henson was elected 2007/08 chair and Susie Johnston was elected vice chair at the July 11 Board of Education meeting (photos at http://www.lanecc.edu/mpr/news/rel00918.htm). Also serving on the board are Robert Ackerman, Pat Albright, Roger Hall, Paul Holman, and Tony McCown (see www.lanecc.edu/presoffc/board). Appointed to serve on community boards were Bob Ackerman to the Oregon Community College Association board, with Pat Albright as alternate; Pat Albright to the Lane Economic Committee of the Lane Council of Governments; Roger Hall to the Lane Foundation board; and Susie Johnston to the Lane Council of Governments board.
THE PRESIDENT'S GOALS for 2007/08 were distributed at the July 11 Board of Education meeting. The goals include achieving and sustaining fiscal stability; building organizational capacity and systems to support student success and effective operations; creating, enhancing and maintaining facilities that are safe, accessible, functional, well-equipped, appealing and environmentally sound; and fostering the growth of learners by providing exemplary and innovative teaching and learning experiences and student support services.
THE AVIATION CAREERS EXPLORATION summer academy was a success, attracting 12 participants over last year’s 7. All students logged flight time in a Cessna 152, visited the control tower at Eugene, and explored careers as pilot and aviation maintenance technicians. One participant enrolled in the Flight Tech program on the first day of the camp, and six more expressed interest in Regional Technical Education Consortium courses.

SUSTAINABILITY initiatives at Lane including comments from President Mary Spilde were featured in a Chronicle of Higher Education story published August 6.
