June 2006 Highlights

LOBBYVISION debuted in Building 1 to alert students to deadlines, news and information pertaining to their enrollment at Lane. A joint effort by Counseling and Enrollment Services, LobbyVision displays a looping PowerPoint presentation on a 42-inch monitor on the wall near the service counter. The feedback from students has been extremely positive.

OREGON COMMUNITY CREDIT UNION donated $10,000 to the Foundation to serve as this year's exclusive platinum sponsor of the Harvest Dinner and Auction. The dinner will be held October 27. Featured guest chefs will be Caprial and John Pence of Caprial's Bistro in Portland and hosts of the OPB program, "Cooking for Family and Friends."

A NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION three-year grant totaling $782,144 was awarded to Lane to develop coursework in geographic information science (GIS). The grant project will infuse GIS modules into science, social science and computer information technology courses, and develop a three-course sequence for articulation with universities.

FACULTY RECOGNITION AWARDS were presented to four instructors spring term:

Barbara Sullivan, Language, Literature and Communication; Gary Mort, Science; Katie Morrison-Graham, Science; and Stephen Selph, Math. Faculty are nominated on the basis of excellence in their work inside and outside of the classroom by students, staff, faculty and alumni.

MICHELL RONNING was named Outstanding Classified Employee of the Month for June. Michell is a graduate of Lane's Early Childhood Education program and has worked at Lane since 1984. In 2000 she became the Child Care Center coordinator.

A LONGHOUSE GROUNDBREAKING was held June 21, sponsored by the Lane Foundation and the Native American Student Association. Tribal elders, elected officials and many supporters attended the gathering at the site overlooking the track on main campus. The longhouse will be the first on a community college campus that is not part of a tribal college. The vision for a longhouse was presented by Frank Merrill, former Native American program director, nearly 13 years ago. Merrill was honored at the event. For more information, see www.lanecc.edu/nasa/longhouse.

THE ART-O-MAT from Lane's art gallery will be exhibited at the Hult Center lobby for the summer. The retired cigarette vending machine now dispenses art, for $5 each, including works by Lane students. Lane's Art-o-mat is the only one in Oregon and is one of 80 nationwide.

CENTER BUILDING ROOF REPLACEMENT got underway and is scheduled for completion by mid-September. The project consists of demolition of wood shakes and removal of felt-containing asbestos during evening hours, installation of new metal siding, replacing current skylights with new skylight systems, and replacement of the north side window with a double-pane window.

THE WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT upgrade is underway. The $1.8 million project is funded by the bond project account. The new plant will treat wastewater through a natural process. After treatment, the discharge will be held in ponds or pumped into Russell Creek. The discharge will be clean enough to irrigate the athletic fields in summer without any adverse effects. Work should be completed by December.
