June 2005 Highlights

THE 2005/06 COLLEGE BUDGET was adopted by the Lane Community College Board of Education at its June 8 meeting. There was no public comment at the hearing held prior to the vote.

A LONGHOUSE funding pledge of $250,000 from the Lane Community College Board of Education was renewed at the board's June 8 meeting. In addition, the board gave the go-ahead to begin planning for March 2006 construction.

LANE'S 40TH ANNIVERSARY GRADUATION was held June 11 at the Lane County Fairgrounds. About 450 college and GED students participated in the commencement ceremony. This year, Lane awarded approximately 1,200 degrees and certificates to 1,100 students. A photo of Lane's first graduating class was published in The Register-Guard on June 3, a feature story about the spirit of Lane graduation was the topic of a June 11 RG story, and outgoing ASLCC student body president Tony McCown was featured in a June 12 RG story.

THE MEN'S BASEBALL TEAM finished second in the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges Southern Region. The women's track and field team placed second in the NWAACC championships with NWACC Co-Coach of the Year Grady O'Connor.

GARY CONKLIN was named Employee of the Month for June. He is the Mail Services coordinator and courier. He started at Lane in July 2000 as a time-sheet employee and became a member of the bargaining unit in September 2002. Gary volunteers in Tutor Central helping students with accounting, business, and computer skills.

SUMMER HOURS took effect June 20 and continue through August 12. Lane is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and closed to the public on Fridays.

SUMMER ACADEMIES were promoted to increase access to college learning opportunities for high school students. The line up includes summer sessions in aviation, construction, customer service training, international, Rites of Passage, web technology, and youth entrepreneurship.
