June 2003 Highlights

JAY BOZIEVICH was appointed to the Zone 2 position on the Board of Education through June 30 at the board’s June 11 meeting. ROBERT ACKERMAN left the Zone 2 seat in April after two separate terms of dedicated service, from 1965-73 and 1999-2003

PRESIDENT MARY SPILDE received high praise in her second annual evaluation at the June 11 Board of Education meeting. She was commended for inspiring confidence and stability in times of uncertain funding, for fiscal integrity and vision, and many other attributes. She declined a salary increase saying she would rather wait until the college is on firmer financial ground.

THE ANNUAL BUDGET hearing was held with no public comment and the 2003/04 budget and related appropriations resolutions were adopted by 6-0 vote of the Board of Education on June 11. The general fund is $68,944,572

BARBARA DELANSKY, director of Student Life and Leadership Development, published an article on designing student spaces, in the May issue of The Bulletin, a journal of the Association of College Unions International.

ALAN FELDMAYER, College Finance accountant, was named Classified Employee of the Month for June. He was commended for outstanding work with Banner implementation and assisting staff with the new system.

FACULTY RECOGNITION AWARDS were announced in classroom visits and at graduation. Recipients were Barbara DeFilippo, Social Science; Linda Gonzalves, Women's Program/Transitions to Success; Stan Paulic, English as a Second Language; David Rothgery, English; and Rick Simms, Media Arts and Technology. Nominations were made by students, staff, faculty and alumni.

IN MEMORY. Jay Jones passed away June 19. He joined Lane in 1969 as a counselor and was director of student activities from 1972 until his retirement in 1991. Tom Lasswell passed away June 10; he taught fundamentals of speech communications at Lane in 1980/81.

GRADUATION was held June 14 at the Lane County Fairgrounds. About 400 students participated.

EXPRESSLANE brought online registration to Lane. Students now use the web to register for classes, obtain unofficial transcripts, check financial aid status, and conduct other business. Everyone's saving time and money and more staff are available for personal assistance.

THE FUJITSU CONSULTING web site featured Lane's employment of the implementation and support of firewall and intrusion detection solutions.

THE PACIFIC ISLANDS REPORT online news service will reprint the success story on Lane culinary arts graduate Jerry Nathan who plans to open a bed and breakfast in his hometown Marshall Islands.
