LARRY ROMINE resigned from the Lane Community College Board of Education for health reasons. He served on the board for nearly nine years in two separate terms of service, from May 1997 to March 2001 in the Zone 1 position, and in the Zone 5 position since September 2002. Pat Albright was sworn at the board’s April 23 meeting to complete the unexpired term.
THE ASLCC ELECTION was held May 8-10. Dan Dawson was elected student body president and Max McNalley was elected vice president. Also elected were Cody Anderson, treasurer, and Leif Brecke, campus events/multicultural program coordinator. Students approved a $.50 fee to support student-written and directed plays.
WILLIAM CJ JOHNSON and MEGAN WORMAN were named 2007 Oregon Community College Association Student Scholars along with scholars selected from each of Oregon's two-year colleges. They were honored at the state capitol on May 9. Johnson, an elementary education major, has a 3.542 GPA and plans to transfer to the University of Oregon. Worman, a psychology major, has a 4.138 GPA and also plans to transfer to the UO.
POTENTIAL BOND PROJECTS and costs were reviewed by the Board of Education at its May 9 meeting. The board has not made a formal decision to pursue a bond but directed the president to continue preliminary planning.
THE MAY 15 BOARD ELECTION filled four positions on the Board of Education for four-year terms from July 1, 2007, to June 30, 2011. Tony McCown of Eugene was elected to the Zone 2 position which primarily represents the northern part of the college district. He will succeed Jay Bozievich of Eugene. Pat Albright of Eugene was elected to the Zone 5 position, primarily representing central Eugene. He was appointed to the seat in April to fill the unexpired term of Larry Romine, who stepped down. Roger Hall of Eugene was re-elected to the At-Large Position 6 seat; he was first elected in 1991 and re-elected in 1995, 1999, and 2003. Robert Ackerman of Eugene was elected to the At-Large Position 7 seat. He previously served on the board from 1965-1973 and 1999-2003. He will succeed Michael Rose of Eugene.
COLLEGE INFORMATION NIGHT FOR LATINO students and families was held May 15 at Springfield High School, cosponsored by Lane Community College, Springfield Public Schools, GEAR UP, and Selco Community Credit Union. The event attracted 300 people.
THE FIRST NURSING CLASS REUNION was held May 19, sponsored by the Lane Foundation. More than 100 alumni participated. In addition, a Nursing Alumni Association was established.
DR. GENE HAUGEN, technology consultant for the Oregon Small Business Development Center Network, addressed the 2007 National Technology Leadership Summit May 21-23 at the National Press Club in Washington D.C. OSBDCN is nationally recognized for creating eSBDC, an online delivery tool for a wide variety of services, including e-counseling (business coaching). OSBDCN is headquartered at Lane and is a partnership of the Small Business Administration, the Oregon Economic Development Department and Oregon community colleges and universities.
FACULTY, CLASSIFIED AND MANAGEMENT EMPLOYEES gave up cost of living raises for 2007/08, and made other contractual adjustments, to avoid layoffs and help the college balance next year’s budget.
