May 2003 Highlights
ADVISORY COMMITTEES were recognized for outstanding service at a reception on May 1. About 200 people attended. Diesel tech and nursing committees were recognized for contributions to curriculum and financial support. Also in May, the Professional Technical Education Coordinating Committee commended the auto body and fender committee for securing five $1,000 student scholarships from industry this year, in addition to other donations of cash, supplies, and curriculum support.
ENERGY MANAGEMENT instructors Roger Ebbage and Mike Hatten taught a five-day workshop in Cyprus on energy efficiency and energy auditing of commercial buildings for faculty from four Middle Eastern universities. The workshop was funded by a grant from the U.S. State Department.
RESPECTFUL ENVIRONMENT policies and values were disrupted by incidents of racial name calling and offensive leafleting on campus. President Mary Spilde responded with a series of all-staff e-mails, an all-staff meeting May 13, and comments at the May 14 Board of Education meeting, to affirm that Lane is committed to creating a respectful learning and working environment and that racial harassment will not be tolerated. She also appointed a response team whose plan was made available May 22.
THE BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT CENTER named Fall Creek Farm & Nursery as farm business of the year, and Pacific Yurts as small business of the year, at its annual open house on May 15. Both businesses are center clients.
THE ELECTION for Lane Community College Board of Education openings concluded May 20. Elected were Paul Homan to Zone 1, Jay Bozievich to Zone 2, Larry Romine to Zone 5, Roger Hall to At Large Position 6, and Michael Rose to At Large Position 7.
THE BUDGET COMMITTEE for Lane Community College met May 7, 14, and 21 and approved a budget for Board of Education adoption in June.
ONLINE REGISTRATION replaced telephone registration May 24 when callers were directed to Lane’s web site at www.lanecc.edu to register via ExpressLane, a new self-service web tool. Students nationwide increasingly prefer online registration. It improves efficiency at the college and frees up more staff time for in-person assistance.
RETIREMENTS were accepted from about 60 employees this year. A recognition reception for retirees was held May 29.
