STUDENTS ANDREA RUSSELL AND JEREMY SORIANO were named 2009 Oregon Community College Association Student Scholars and joined other community college scholars for an awards ceremony with the governor and a luncheon on April 15. Soriano, 20, spoke at the luncheon. He is a biology major and will transfer to the UO for a degree in secondary education biology. Russell, 31, is an Air Force veteran and mother of three. She is a math major and also plans to transfer to the UO for a degree in secondary education math. LANE GRADUATE AND ATHLETE Cyrus Hostetler set the world record in the javelin with a throw of 272 feet 10 inches at a University of Oregon meet on April 4. He achieved the second-best effort of his career with a throw of 261 feet 11 inches at the next meet on April 24, and still holds the world record.

A GREAT MONTH FOR GRANTS—

  • Lane won a $100,000 GreenPower grant from the Eugene Water and Electric Board to build a solar-powered electric vehicle charging station on main campus. The grant will be combined with other funds, including some from Lane’s bond, to construct the grid of solar panels to power 36 outlets to recharge plug-in electric or hybrid vehicles.
  • Lane won a $100,000 grant from the American Council on Education and the Wal-Mart Foundation for a Success for Veterans project. Lane was one of 20 institutions selected from among 250 applicants. Lane’s project is called Lane Integration of Vets in Education (LIVE). It will increase services to student veterans including first-year experiences, learning communities, advising, supplemental instruction, and early intervention services.
  • Lane's English as a Second Language Program received a $1,000 grant from the Cottage Grove Community Foundation to pay for caregivers to watch children while their parents are in classes next door at Bohemia Elementary.

INNOVATION AWARDS for 2008-09 were announced by the Lane Foundation:

  • The Agricultural Business Management Program at the Business Development Center won the $1,500 Innovation of the Year Award, sponsored by the League for Innovation.
  • The Sustainability Infusion Project won a $750 Schafer Great Idea Award.
  • The Automotive Technology Program Redesign won a $500 Schafer Great Idea Award.
  • The Siltcoos Station Refurbish won a $500 Schafer Great Idea Award.
  • The ESL WIKI won a $250 Schafer Pat on the Back Award.
  • The Lane Peace Center won a $250 Schafer Pat on the Back Award.
  • The Music Thanatology Training Program won a $250 Schafer Pat on the Back Award.

THE ANNUAL MATH SKILLS FAIR brought 150 high school students to campus on April 15.

HANDS-ON CAREER DAY brought another 200 high school students to campus on April 24.

DEFERRED MAINTENANCE work got underway. Lane received $8 million in Go Oregon! state stimulus funds, the largest stimulus investment in the Eugene-Springfield area. Most of the 15 projects will be done over the summer to minimize disruption to classes. All work will be completed in about a year. About 250 local jobs will result including about 50 new hires at Lane. Project updates are available online at www.lanecc.edu/facilities/dm Legislators visited campus May 2 to view the projects and meet some of the new hires.

CHAMBERS COMMUNICATIONS was named Cooperative Education Employer of the Year and was honored at the Advisory Committee Gala on April 28. Chambers has mentored 56 media arts students over the past two decades and hired 41 of them. Chambers operates three ABC affiliates, including KEZI 9 in Eugene, and Chambers Productions, a film and video production company.

LANE AND KLCC won two firsts in Register-Guard Readers' Choice Awards published April 11. Lane was voted the number one "most reliable career counseling service" and KLCC was voted the "most entertaining radio station."

RECYCLEMANIA: Lane ranked 13th among 148 colleges and universities competing in the waste minimization category of Recyclemania 2009, with cumulative waste per person of 16.69 pounds over a 10-week period. Last year, Lane ranked fourth; nonetheless, the college reduced its per capita waste by 37 percent more this year.

STUDENT CALLERS exceeded the Foundation's first phonathon goal of $10,000 by several hundred dollars. The 14 students made more than 3,000 calls to previous donors, retirees and some alums.

SWINE FLU monitoring and response was coordinated by the Health Clinic after news of an outbreak in Mexico in late April. Some cases had been reported in Lane County.
