ADULT BASIC SKILLS FACULTY received awards from the Oregon Council of Adult Basic Skills Development. Mary Foust received the Teacher of the Year Award and Dennis Clark received the Adult Basic Skills Leader of the Year Award. Clark has taught at Lane for 21 years, and Foust has taught here for 24 years.

APPLIED SCIENTIFIC INSTRUMENTATION WAS NAMED EMPLOYER OF THE YEAR by Lane’s Cooperative Education Division. Ten of ASI’s 15 employees are Lane graduates who completed internships at the company while they were electronics technology students. ASI is a maker of hardware and systems for microscope automation and imaging. John Zemek is founder and director of ASI.

THE LEARNING COMMUNITY: EXCAVATING CREATIVITY: MOVEMENT, IMAGE AND TEXT, was named Lane’s Innovation of the Year. The community integrates dance, drawing, and writing. Instructors are Margaret Bayless, on the English faculty since 1992; JS Bird, art faculty since 2004; and Bonnie Simoa, dance faculty since 1999. National research shows that students who take Learning Communities succeed at higher rates than students in stand-alone courses.

LANE’S CAREER AND TECHNICAL DVD won a first-place Gold Paragon Award from the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations at its annual conference. NCMPR is an organization for communications professionals at two-year colleges. Lane’s Marketing and Public Relations department, led by Tracy Simms, worked with career and technical division chairs, faculty, students and staff, and with Chambers Communications, to produce the interactive DVD. It was distributed to advisory committees, business leaders, high school counselors, and others.

FOUR MORE FLORENCE BUSINESSES earned "Q" certification from the Oregon Tourism Commission after completing "Q" customer service training at Lane Community College at Florence. Almost 500 Florence-area employees have participated in the training since it was first offered in 2005. Bob Purscelley directs the Florence center.

KLCC EXCEEDED ITS SPRING FUNDRAISING GOAL with $282,295 in pledges on the last day of Radiothon. The goal was $280,000. More than 3,350 Oregon households contributed. Online listeners from as far away as Mexico and Australia also contributed.

LANE’S SIGMA ZETA CHAPTER OF PHI THETA KAPPA received two awards at the PTK international convention: Top 100 Chapter, and Paragon Award For New Advisors to Velda Arnaud. Nearly 500 chapters competed for the awards.

THE SUCCESS AND GOAL ATTAINMENT COMMITTEE (SAGA) launched an online newsletter at http://lanecc.edu/saga/documents/e_newsvol1.pdf The publication provides new developments in student success practices at Lane.

A WASTE AUDIT on April 19 revealed that campus waste headed for the landfill includes food waste (22 percent), paper towels and napkins (21 percent), and disposable paper soda and coffee cups (12 percent). See full results at www.lanecc.edu/sustainability/projects.html Even though there’s room for improvement, Lane currently recycles 60 percent of its waste.

LANE'S LEARNING GARDEN completed its first harvest of organic salad greens as part of Lane's Earth Day celebration on April 19. The lettuces, baby kale, arugula, cress, mache, and mustard greens were served in the cafeteria salad bar. Student volunteers participated in designing, building and maintaining the Learning Garden. A Lane Learning Garden Club has formed to oversee the garden project.

BUDGET PROPOSALS for 2007/08 were presented to the Board of Education. Union leaders agreed to explore ways to control salary expense to mitigate potential layoffs so no notices were announced. Budget development continues at the Budget Committee and Board of Education meetings. The board makes final decisions and must adopt the budget in June.
