April 2006 Highlights

BEVERLY FARFAN, cooperative education instructor, was named Educator of the Year by the Oregon Department of Education, Office of Student Learning and Partnerships, and the Oregon Parent Training and Information Center, at a conference in Salem. Farfan coordinates the Career Workforce Skills Training Project at Lane in partnership with the Oregon Department of Vocational Rehabilitation. The award recognizes Farfan for a unique and innovative teaching style when working with students with disabilities.

STEVE CANDEE, political science instructor and cooperative education coordinator, was installed as president of the National Social Science Association, at a conference in Las Vegas. His term is for two years. He previously served as vice president and has been on the governing and editorial boards for the past 20 years.

KAREN EDMONDS was named Employee of the Month for April. Karen has served Lane as High School and Community Relations coordinator since July 2001. She helped develop the Lane to Your Future program that brings high school students of color to campus for a day; the Gear Up Program that brings federal funds to Lane; and Lane Preview Night which this year attracted 1,000 attendees. She coordinates Lane’s presence at the Lane County Fair, Asian Celebration and other community events.

BUDGET REDUCTION PROPOSALS FOR 2006/07 were presented to the Board of Education on April 12. Earlier that day, the proposals were shared with college council and employees. News media also was notified. The proposals address a $5.9 million deficit primarily through layoffs of classified employees, but no program reductions and no tuition increases.

LANE SHONE IN THE SUSTAINABILITY SPOTLIGHT in April. The college was featured in the April 2006 issue of the nationally distributed Business Officer magazine. A nine-page story on sustainability on campuses included a half-page about Lane's sustainability efforts including the signing of the Talloires Declaration, two-year degrees in energy management and renewable energy technology, the sustainability office and staffing, the award-winning recycling program, and more. In addition, Lane was the cover feature of EWEB's spring 2006 issue of Fresh Air, a newsletter distributed to the utility's renewable energy customers. Lane is EWEB's largest windpower customer.

KLCC’s spring radiothon raised $250,195. Two-thirds of the station’s budget comes from listeners and local businesses.
