April 2003 Highlights
THE ENERGY MANAGEMENT PROGRAM was named 2002/03 Innovation of the Year at Lane. The program began in 1992 with a Bonneville Power Administration grant and now is funded by the Eugene Water and Electric Board. The program is a model of industry-supported education and is coordinated by Roger Ebbage. Innovation awards are sponsored at colleges nationwide by the League for Innovation.
CHRISTINE STRAHAN, international admissions specialist, was named Outstanding Classified Employee of the Month for April.
DENTAL HYGIENE STUDENTS achieved a 100 percent pass rate on their Western Region Anesthesia Board exam on April 12 at Lane, upholding a long tradition of program excellence and student success. The students have one more clinical board exam to complete in June to become licensed dental hygienists.
NAOMI SOULES, former Continuing Education coordinator, died April 12. She worked at the college from November 1974 to June 2002.
IRAQ, DEMOCRACY & US: AN EDUCATIONAL FORUM was held April 23 to offer a diversity of information and promote critical thinking, sponsored by the President's Office, Faculty Council, Classified Council, LCCEA, and LCCEF.
LANE SCHOLARS Mary Phelps and Cynthia Young were named Outstanding Student Scholars for 2003 at Lane. They met with scholars from Oregon's other community colleges and were honored in a ceremony with the governor on April 25. The Oregon Community College Association holds the scholar’s event every April. Phelps, 42, is majoring in psychology and will graduate this spring with an associate of arts Oregon transfer degree. She plans to transfer to Oregon State University. Young, 39, is completing the chemical dependency counselor program. She has a bachelor's and plans to pursue a master's degree in counseling in spring 2004.
REVENUE, PROGRAM, AND SERVICE LEVEL RECOMMENDATIONS for 2003/04 were approved by the Board of Education at a special meeting on April 28. Decisions were preceded by several work sessions and forums for public, student, and staff input. The recommendations are available on the web at: http://www.lanecc.edu/budget/0304/budget0304.htm.
LANE WON TWO PARAGON AWARDS in this year's annual competition sponsored by the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations, an affiliate of the American Association of Community Colleges. A Silver Paragon, second place, was awarded for print advertising series, and a Bronze Paragon, third place, was awarded for the single print ad. The ads promoted Continuing Education classes and were developed by Daniel Moret in Marketing and Public Relations with assistance from Shirley Nagy in Printing/Graphics.
