March 2006 Highlights

A DEGREE PARTNERSHIP with Oregon State University was implemented in a signing ceremony March 9 with Lane President Mary Spilde and OSU President Ed Ray. Previously known as dual enrollment, the program increases access to higher education, improves student success, and encourages completion of a four-year degree. Students are jointly admitted and concurrently enrolled. They can attend classes and apply to receive financial aid at both institutions. The program officially begins summer term 2006.

AN RV CONSORTIUM workforce training program was visited by the governor and media on March 7. Consortium partners include Lane, the Lane Workforce Partnership, Country Coach, Marathon Coach, and Monaco Coach. Training is scheduled for 1,900 employees in a variety of skills, from leadership to vinyl repair to audiovisual systems.

A NEW RETAIL MANAGEMENT CERTIFICATE PROGRAM was approved by Board of Education action on March 8. The program includes existing courses in business administration, math, public speaking, computing, and accounting.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL coach Greg Sheley was named the Coach of the Year for the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges Southern Division on March 4. The women’s team won its second straight division championship and set a college record. The women went on to win the first NWAACC women’s basketball championship in college history.

KLCC news won three top awards from the Oregon Associated Press Broadcast Association. The station won first place for best treatment of a single subject; second place for best use of sound; and second place for best feature.

TONI TIMMERS was named Classified Employee of the Month for March. Toni has served Lane as a part-time employee since 1997 and as a contracted classified employee in Social Science since September 2004. She works in the testing labs and has been innovative in streamlining and standardizing processes.

GREG MORGAN was announced as the new associate vice president for finance, following a national search. He most recently served as senior vice president for overseas military banking for Bank of America. He has 20 years experience as an adjunct instructor teaching accounting, business and ethics. He has a master’s of science in systems management, a bachelor of science in business management and Asian studies, and CPA certification. He starts May 1.
