March 2004 Highlights

ELLEN JONES was named Outstanding Classified Employee of the Month for March. She is the veteran's specialist in Enrollment Services where she serves 500 veterans and dependants. She joined Lane in September 1986.

GERMAN "CHUCK" ELLSWORTH died March 1 of multiple myeloma at age 66. He was a charter faculty member at Lane. He originally taught at the Eugene Technical-Vocational School which became the nucleus of Lane in 1964. He then taught aviation maintenance at the college until his retirement in 1996.

TELEVISION STATION KEZI 9 (ABC) featured Continuing Education classes on its morning newscasts from March 15-19. Studio or on-site visits were broadcast for home repair, massage, comedy, clogging, motorcycle riding, digital photography, bricklaying, and harmonica.

LANE TRANSIT DISTRICT directors decided to continue the $54 Lane FastPass through summer term. LTD originally planned to eliminate the pass at the end of spring term. The LCC/LTD Group Pass program will continue to be available at no additional charge to any Lane student taking a credit class on main campus for which they pay the $15 transportation fee.

UPDATED BUDGET PROJECTIONS announced at the March 10 Lane Board of Education meeting showed a reduction in tuition revenue due to enrollment trends. While the projected bottom line remained stable, caution was urged for the future since state funding is still the college's major source of revenue.

ALUMNI from each of the past four decades are sought by the Lane Community College Foundation for four Distinguished Alumni Awards to be presented at the October 28 Harvest Dinner in celebration of the college's upcoming 40th anniversary. Nominations are due June 1. Alumni honored at Lane's 25th anniversary were John Lively, Sue Prichard, David Spriggs, and Sid and Hank Voorhees. The college was established by a vote of the people on October 19, 1964.

DENNIS KUCINICH, Democratic presidential candidate and U.S. Congressman from Ohio, spoke at Lane's Center for Meeting and Learning on March 28, following an appearance on KLCC's Sunday at Noon. A crowd of about 800 attended his speech.

U.S. CONGRESSMAN PETER DEFAZIO was honored by Oregon's governor and the Student Assistance Commission for years of providing scholarships for displaced workers in retraining, including a $1,200 annual scholarship at Lane.
