March 2003 Highlights

THWING HAVENS, programmer analyst with Computer Services, was named Outstanding Classified Employee of the Month for March.

FIVE FIRST-YEAR CULINARY STUDENTS placed second overall and earned the bronze standard at a recent competition at the Western Culinary Institute in Portland. The competition was the first Oregon State Student Team Championship and was sponsored by the American Culinary Federation and the Chefs de Cuisine Society of Oregon. The students were Brandi Mitchell and Eiji Sato of Springfield, Tiff Rockett of Cottage Grove, and Andrew Tan and Josh Zier (team captain) of Eugene. Instructors Bill Gaspard and Clive Wanstall supervised. Lane offers one-year certificates and two-year associate degrees in food service management and hospitality management.

DALE LUGENBEHL, philosophy instructor, published an article in the League for Innovation's February "Learning Abstracts" online publication. The article, "Learning at a Deeper Level," can be found at http://www.lanecc.edu/league/abstracts.htm.

THE CENTER FOR MEETING AND LEARNING became the official name of the thriving new facility in the west wing of Building 19. Anyone needing meeting or training space with conference services including catering may choose from large and small meeting and training rooms, computer classrooms, and an auditorium. Culinary and hospitality instructors and students team up daily with food services and catering staff to provide services.

THE CULINARY, HOSPITALITY AND FOOD SERVICE (CHFS) TEAM concluded a fundraising campaign with $297,195 in cash and $17,020 in in-kind donations for the professional prep kitchen in the Center for Meeting and Learning. The kitchen will qualify Lane to apply for accreditation from the Culinary Institute of America.

FOURTEEN CITIZENS FILED for five Lane Community College Board of Education openings in the May 20 election by the March 20 filing deadline at Lane County Elections. Voters throughout the district vote on all positions, even though candidates filing for a zone position must live within that zone. Filing for Zone 1, the western college district, for a two-year unexpired term, were Rich Cunningham of Eugene, and Paul Holman and Rob Spooner of Florence. Holman is the incumbent and was appointed in December 2002. Running for Zone 2, the northern college district, for a four-year term, were Jay Bozievich and Nadia Sindi, both of Eugene. Incumbent Robert Ackerman did not file for re-election. Filing unopposed for Zone 5, entirely within Eugene, for a four-year term, was incumbent Larry Romine of Eugene. He was appointed in September 2002 and also served from 1997-2001. Filing for At-Large Position 6 for a four-year term were Roger Hall of Eugene, Susie Johnston of Pleasant Hill, Sandie Losee-Hitchcock of Leaburg, Marston Morgan of Cottage Grove, and Jerry Sirois of Springfield. Hall is the incumbent and was elected in 1991. Filing for At-Large Position 7 for a four-year term were Susan Forester, Paul Holvey, and Michael Rose, all of Eugene. Rose is the incumbent and was elected in 1999.
