LAURA MARTIN was named employee of the Month for February. Laura was hired in April 2004 in College Finance Internal Controls.

SCULPTURE INSTRUCTOR LEE IMONEN was featured in the January/February 2008 issue of Sculpture magazine. A six-page article titled, "Lee C. Imonen: Nature, Technology, and Myth," focused on Imonen's recent public sculptures including Sampo, 2003, at the North Capitol Mall Office Building in Salem, located a few blocks from the state capitol; and La Grande Weir, 2006, on the campus of Eastern Oregon University. Imonen has taught at Lane since 2000.

HOW TO PAY FOR COLLEGE IN ONE DAY scholarship and financial aid workshop on January 26 attracted more than 400 people, Lane’s largest attendance ever.

JOHN ZEMEK WAS NAMED TO THE 2007/08 CO-OP HALL OF FAME, one of only 36 cooperative education graduates from two- and four-year colleges nationwide to receive the honor. Zemek was Lane's Cooperative Education Employer of the Year in 2007. He founded Applied Scientific Instrumentation, Inc. Ten of his 15 employees are Lane graduates who held co-op internships with ASI. Zemek earned his associate degree at Lane in 1988.

CULINARY AND HOSPITALITY STUDENTS prepared and served food at the annual community Project Homeless Connect day on February 7 at the Lane County fairgrounds. The event provides one day of care and services for local homeless citizens, from eye exams to hot meals and veterinary care.

LANE’S FIRST PEACE AND DEMOCRACY CONFERENCE was held February 29 to March 1. Keynote speakers included Medea Benjamin of CODEPINK and Global Exchange, and Bob Wing of United for Peace & Justice. The center is an outcome of a vision by President Mary Spilde, faculty Stan Taylor, manager Peg Allison, and others.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S BASKETBALL ended successful seasons at the NWAACC Championship Tournament in Kennewick, WA, February 28 through March 2. The women's team brought home the third place trophy, and player Mercedes Alexander was named to the All-Tournament Team. The men's team made their first playoff appearance since 2006. This season, the women Titans won their fourth consecutive Southern Region title and increased their home-win streak to 63 games in a row.

LANE ENTERED RECYCLEMANIA, a national recycling competition for colleges and universities. By the end of the third week on February 16, Lane had advanced to third place in the Waste Minimization category, pulling ahead of institutions such as Harvard, Princeton, Yale, the University of Texas at Austin, and Portland State University. That week, Lane recycled 7,509 pounds of paper, cardboard, and beverage containers, and created only 10,716 pounds of trash.
