February 2006 Highlights

DENTAL HYGIENE STUDENTS participated in the nationwide "Give Kids a Smile Day" on February 3 to provide free dental services to children who do not have access to care. Nineteen children from Springfield grade schools were accompanied by a parent to the clinic and received a teeth cleaning, sealants, x-rays, a dental examination, and restorative care. Three local dentists provided fillings, extractions and examinations for the children. Lane first and second year students participated in direct patient care. Lane’s Dental Clinic has been integral in meeting the needs of low-income community children during the past year through partnership with the RiverStone federally qualified health clinic.

THE BLACK STUDENT UNION presented three events in observance of Black History Month in February. Soprano Elizabeth Lyra Ross performed and lectured on "Classical Music and the African American Experience" on February 9; students recreated Eugene's Tent City on February 18, a re-enactment of the living conditions of African American residents in Eugene in the 1940s; and a lecture by author J.L. King, "On the Down Low: Race, Racism, Homophobia, and the Spread of HIV" was presented February 21.

STRAIGHT-A LCC STUDENT JOSEPH LANDER was featured in local news coverage in February as the nation’s first graduate of the federal drug court program. The program helps participants overcome addictions, become accountable and change their lives. As part of his program, Lander enrolled at Lane Community College.

HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT INSTRUCTOR JOE MCCULLY published an article in the Community College Times. "Oregon college uses all opportunities to prepare students" illustrated some of the key features of Lane's successful hospitality and culinary arts program, including American Culinary Federation accreditation, the citizen advisory committee, student participation in community events, classical cuisine dinners, the Center for Meeting and Learning, and more. The Times is nationally distributed and published by the American Association of Community Colleges.

TOVA STABIN was hired as interim diversity coordinator following a competitive process. She served as a diversity trainer at Lane since 2001, and has been a diversity educator and information consultant in the community for the past 20 years. She succeeds Jim Garcia who was appointed interim Chicano/Latino Student Program coordinator.

AL FRANKEN, national liberal talk show host, comedian and author, broadcast his February 17 national radio show, Air America, from Lane’s Performance Hall. He was hosted by local radio station KOPT AM.
