A $1 MILLION GIFT was anonymously donated to establish the first endowed chair at Lane Community College. The endowment will be used to support teaching with specific uses to be determined, such as attracting new faculty, developing new fields of study, or other instructional efforts. The donor attended Lane in the mid-'60s. The gift is a charitable remainder unitrust that allows a donor to transfer property to the Lane Foundation and receive a tax deduction and income for life. When the trust terminates, the earnings will fund the endowed chair.
TWO $1,000 NURSING SCHOLARSHIPS for 2004/05 were created by a gift from Women's Care, a Eugene-area physicians and surgeons group.
“LCC IS LANE COUNTY’S MOST POWERFUL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AGENCY, opening the door to jobs, new skills, further education and better lives….” said an editorial in The Register-Guard. The editorial lamented enrollment decline following tuition increases and program reductions caused by funding shortfalls.
CULINARY ARTS STUDENTS won first place in a state-level American Culinary Federation competition, outperforming students from Portland’s well-known Western Culinary Arts Institute.
THREE PASTEL PAINTINGS by the late James Ulrich were stolen from the Art Department Gallery from an exhibit including the work of Ulrich’s widow, Kathleen Caprario, who teaches at Lane and the University of Oregon.
CARPET WAS REMOVED from selected areas of the first floor of Building 1 due to mold found in some carpet samples. Staff were temporarily relocated.
TODD SMITH was named Outstanding Classified Employee of the Month for February. Smith is a carpenter and project manager in Facilities Management and Planning. He joined Lane in 1996.
MARJE BLOOD of West Virginia died February 10 of age-related causes. She was secretary to Bert Dotson, current Lane Budget Committee member, and first assistant to Dale Parnell, Lane’s first president.
THE LANE COMMUNITY COLLEGE BOARD OF EDUCATION agreed it was important to meet at Lane's major outreach centers -- Florence and Cottage Grove. The administration was directed to develop a schedule.
