February 2003 Highlights
SUE IVERSON, programmer analyst with Computer Services, was named Outstanding Classified Employee of the Month for February.
15-PASSENGER VAN USE was discontinued February 4, following nationwide safety concerns and the advice of the college’s insurance company.
THE WORKFORCE NETWORK held a grand opening on February 10. Speakers included Congressman Peter DeFazio who has supported the program since 1983 when it was known as the Dislocated Worker Program. Network facilities were funded by Lane’s construction bond. The network is an initiative of the Lane Workforce Partnership, Lane Community College, Oregon Employment Department, and Oregon Vocational Rehabilitation Services. Services include job search, career development, skills evaluation, and help applying for financial aid.
ROGER HALL, chair of Lane’s Board of Education, received a plaque of appreciation from the Oregon Community College Association in recognition of his 12 years of dedicated service.
LANE’S NEW VISION, MISSION, CORE VALUES AND STRATEGIC GOALS approved by the board February 12 were posted to http://www.lanecc.edu/research/strplan2003.htm.
THE FIRST STEPS TOWARD SELLING BONDS to finance the college's unfunded PERS liability were taken at the February 12 Board of Education meeting. Unless the board withdraws before pricing is set, Lane will participate in a pool with other Oregon community colleges to issue taxable pension bonds in April or later. Legislative action may lower the unfunded liability.
DIFFERENTIAL PRICING was discussed at the February 12 Board of Education meeting. The idea is whether and how to charge more tuition or fees for costlier classes or those with more "consumable" use. Administration will continue to analyze the issue.
LANE’S BOARD MEMBERSHIP in the League for Innovation in the Community College has been renewed following an exhaustive review. Colleges must reapply for board status when they have a change of president. Lane began with a self-study resulting in a 106-page report submitted in October which “raised the bar for self-evaluation documents," said Mark Milliron, president and CEO of the League. Then Milliron and two other League representatives, board chair Dr. Peter Boyse and board member Dr. Henry Shannon, visited Lane January 27-28. Lane showcased many innovations for the visitors, such as the Strategic Learning Initiative, diversity plan, Community College Moment faculty journal, the Rites of Passages program, the Spanish program, and others. The visitors recommended Lane's continued membership and the full board supported that recommendation at its spring meeting on February 26-28. The League stimulates innovation and experimentation at community colleges and serves 750 associate members. Lane has been one of 19 board members for many years and is the only League college in Oregon.
TUITION SURCHARGES for spring term due to the defeat of Measure 28 were enacted. The surcharges are: residents of Oregon, $2.50 per credit hour; nonresidents including international, $9 per credit hour; noncredit, $0.14 per contact hour.
A SUCCESS STORY WEB PAGE was created by Marketing and Public Relations and posted to the web at http://www.lanecc.edu/mpr/success/index.htm on February 27. The page will highlight the successes of students, faculty and staff, programs, and other Lane success stories.
