January 2009

STAFF AND STUDENTS shared honors at the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day community event at the Hult Center on January 19. Ruth Wren received the 2009 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Award from the Associated Students of Lane Community College for her service to students and for furthering social justice. She is the administrative coordinator for the Women’s Program. Greg Evans was honored by Lane’s Black Student Union for his work with students and the community, and by the MLK Celebration Committee for his community service. He also chaired the Rosa Parks Memorial Committee. He coordinates the African American Student Program at Lane. Former Lane student Will Doolitle received the Humanitarian Award from the Eugene Human Rights Commission and former Lane student Lacie Heffron modeled for the Rosa Parks statue dedicated at the downtown bus station. ASLCC and the Black Student Union have been instrumental in coordinating local MLK events for many years.

THE INAUGURATION OF BARACK OBAMA was shown at the Center for Meeting and Learning, in the cafeteria, and at other campus locations on January 20. Hundreds of students and staff attended.

SHARON EDWARDS was named Classified Employee of the Month for January. She is project specialist for the Oregon Small Business Development Center Network that is headquartered at Lane. Sharon joined Lane and the OSBDCN in June 1988.

THE OREGON JAZZ FESTIVAL on January 23-24 attracted more than 450 students from 25 middle schools, high schools, Lane and the UO. The students heard, learned and performed with nationally known jazz artists. The annual event is sponsored by Lane Community College and the University of Oregon.

THE ANNUAL FINANCIAL AID AND SCHOLARSHIP workshop, “How to Pay for College--In One Day!" attracted record attendance of more than 550 people. The event was held January 24 in the Center for Meeting and Learning and included information about finding college scholarships, writing quality application essays, and completing federal financial aid forms. Sponsors were Roehl & Sittner Investment Advisors LLC, Higher One, Lane Community College Foundation, and College Goal Sunday.

LANE EMPLOYEES CONTRIBUTED more than $94,000 to the annual Employee Campaign. A total of 294 Lane employees contributed $67,701 to the Lane Community College Foundation plus $25,899 to United Way of Lane County. Five departments had 100 percent participation: Academic and Student Affairs, Business Development Center, College Services, Laundry, and President's Office.

AN ONLINE BOX OFFICE was launched for Music, Dance and Theater Arts events.

LANE COMPOSTED more than five-and-a-half tons of food and waste last term, thanks to the collaboration of Food Services and Recycling to provide compostable knives, forks, spoons, cups, plates, bowls and other dining-ware in the cafeteria.
