Monthly Highlights

January 2004 Highlights

SNOW AND ICE resulted in some closures and delays for Lane: Monday, December 29, main campus, Downtown Center and Cottage Grove center closed at 11:30 a.m.; Tuesday, December 30, main campus, DTC, and Flight Tech closed; Friday, January 2, all locations delayed two hours, except Florence; Monday, January 5, all locations closed except Florence. Tuesday, January 6, all locations closed except Florence. Wednesday, January 7, all locations open by noon (Florence open all day).

JEFFREY DAVIS was named director of Continuing Education and will begin work at the Downtown Center February 9, contingent on Board of Education approval. He leaves the Oregon Consortium and Workforce Alliance in Albany after 11 years as its planning and marketing director.

THE BLACK STUDENT UNION at Lane was recognized with a plaque at the annual Kwanzaa Celebration at Jefferson Middle School for creating, leadership and mentoring of the Umoja Cultural Club at Jefferson.

GEORGE ALVERGUE passed away January 12 from cancer at age 69. He taught history and political science at Lane from 1971-1998 and served on the Board of Education from 1999-2002. His wife Flo created the George Alvergue Endowment Scholarship for New Teachers. The scholarship will help Lane students who are committed to teaching as a profession. Donations may be made through the Lane Community College Foundation at 463-5803.

SUSAN LOWDERMILK, studio art and graphic design instructor, created an artist's book selected for an exhibit, "Ninety From the Nineties: A Decade of Printing," at the New York Public Library. The exhibit, and a mention of Lowdermilk's piece, was featured in a January 2 article in the Art and Leisure Section of The New York Times.

BEVERLY GREGORY was named Outstanding Classified Employee of the Month for January. She works in Food Services and has been at Lane since September 1993.

2004-2005 SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES, a 24-page booklet, was published by the Lane Foundation. It describes 300 scholarships at Lane ranging from $150 to $5,000. The application deadline is March 1. The booklet is available on main campus, at high school counseling offices, and at http://www.lanecc.edu/foundation/. Scholarship donations are up 25 percent including about more than $86,000 in new donations this year.

MERRILL WATROUS, Cooperative Education instructor, published an article in the January 2004 issue of Techniques magazine, a monthly publication of the American Career and Technical Education Association. The article features three Lane co-op students and the importance of relationships in teaching and learning.

ALISON CADBURY, part-time English instructor, won a 2003 Oregon Literary Fellowship for literary nonfiction in progress. Alison received the $1,000 Leslie Bradshaw Fellowship for "Panegyria," a chapter from her book-length work about festivals on the Greek Island of Paros.

THE ANNUAL COLLEGE FINANCIAL AID and Scholarship Workshop on January 17 attracted 340 people, the event's largest enrollment ever. Participants included college students, high school students and parents, and community members.

JAMIE KELSCH, business co-op coordinator, was elected co-president of Lane Leaders Association for 2004. Association membership includes 150 local businesses representing different industries. Several of these businesses provide quality learning sites for Lane students in a variety of career areas.

THE FUNDRAISING DEADLINE FOR THE LONG HOUSE was extended to April 2005 by 7-0 vote at the January 14 Board of Education meeting.

STRATEGIC DIRECTIONS to guide Lane for the next three to five years were approved by 7-0 vote at the January 14 Board of Education meeting. The directions emphasize transforming student lives, transforming the learning environment, and transforming the organization. Goals for each direction will be developed next.

THE ECONOMIC AGREEMENT between the college and the faculty association was unanimously approved at a telephone meeting January 20.

CHERYL ROBERTS, Vice President of Instruction and Student Services at Lane for the past two-and-a-half years, accepted a position at South Seattle Community College. Her last day at Lane was January 30. She received many accolades for her leadership on the accreditation self-study, core values projects, and many other initiatives.
