Coordinating the UO Libraries Web site
I became the UO Libraries Web Coordinator in September 2002
after the most vigorous redesign the libraries had undergone.
At that time, the libraries web publishing protocol began
shifting from a haphazard—yet functional—decentralization
towards a more centralized one which would allow standardization
to begin and global identity to adhere.
At this time, the half-position of Web Coordinator was
created. I jumped at it knowing that I was embarking on
a lengthy, and, at times, hair-pulling process with a significant
learning curve and little thanks.
Today, I have no regrets. Although coordination across libraries
and keeping everyone somewhat happy is a challenging prospect,
I genuinely enjoy collaborating with web publishers across
the UO Libraries system in an effort to create a functional,
effective, and friendly interface between the Libraries
resources and the people who use our site.
Integral to the smooth flow of my work is the Web
Advisory Group. Together, we decide on directions, policies,
and changes needed in the libraries public Web site. We
draft necessary documentation and guidelines, such as the
new Style Manual and the Standards & Guidelines we're
currently working on. We conduct usability tests (one of
my favorite aspects of this position) and respond to concerns
expressed by site users. If you're interested, here's some
of the projects
we're working on now.
