The League for Innovation Responds to Hurricane Katrina Our most heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to our friends and colleagues in the Louisiana Community and Technical College System, as well as all of the residents affected by this devastating hurricane. The League is pleased to announce that the 2006 Learning College Summit will be held June 11-14, 2006, at the Sheraton Westport Chalet in St. Louis, Missouri, and will be hosted by St. Louis Community College. Mark your calendars and save the dates! Additional information will be posted to the Learning College Summit website as it becomes available. SAIL Highlight The most recent version of the National Assessment of Adult Literacy Survey (NAAL) is due for dissemination in December 2005 and should offer key findings and new trends in Adult Education and Literacy. While it can be argued that the percentages indicate very few adults in the U.S. are truly completely illiterate (NALS 1988), of greater social challenge are the many adults with low literacy skills who lack the foundation they need to find and keep decent jobs, support their children's education, and participate actively in civic life. CCTI Expansion The College and Career Transitions Initiative (CCTI) is pleased to announce the expansion of the network. Fifteen exemplar colleges have been working for three years with their high school and business partners on Career Pathways. in America's Community Colleges Announcing the first Workshop on the Impact of Pen-based Technology on Education (WIPTE) Organized by representatives from DyKnow, Microsoft, HP, and several notable educational institutions, the workshop will be held April 6-7, 2006, at Purdue University. WIPTE will bring together educators and technologists who use Tablet PCs and other pen-based technologies in the teaching and learning environment.

CAEL (The Council for Adult and Experiential Learning) invites U.S. community colleges to participate in a pilot project to assess their programs and services for adult learners. The project, funded by Lumina Foundation for Education, is free of charge to participating colleges. Building on its successful adult-focused assessment tools for colleges and universities, CAEL has now created assessments that address specific community college issues. These assessments are based on CAEL's Principles of Effectiveness for Serving Adult Learners. The Collaboration for the Advancement of College Teaching & Learning Hosts Diversity Conference
