Welcome - Lane Annual Spring Conference

Friday, May 5, 2006

Building a Sustainable Community Through Collaboration and Partnerships

Sustainability is the topic for the 2006 Spring Conference. In 1987, the World Commission on Environment and Development stated that "Sustainable development meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." Sustainability is also the idea that when a process is sustainable, it can be carried out over and over without negative environmental effects or impossibly high costs to anyone involved.

Many universities and colleges today have sustainability coordinators and have made sustainability a core value. Higher education has a special leadership role to play in creating smart and sustainable campuses. This embraces everything from "green" campus design (architecture and energy consumption) to teaching and learning about sustainability. Lane Community College's Spring Conference will be dedicated to the exploration of sustainability as a core value and the implications that follow from formal adoption of sustainability as a future direction.
