LEAD ELECTRICIAN

General Characteristics:
A Lead Electrician is responsible for leading and coordinating the work of Electrician positions in installing, maintaining, repairing and removing of electrical systems, equipment and fixtures in College facilities; may perform as a HVAC Technician during an absence; insures completion of remodeling and construction projects, insures that assigned duties are completed on schedule and are done well; does related work as required. Work requires the ability to analyze and troubleshoot problems with electrical systems. This is a leadership position that requires the ability to work in a participative environment including interaction with a diverse population including students and staff. Ability to transport ladders, power and hand tools and electrical equipment, such as fixtures and rolls of wire, and to work on ladders and knees as required. Working conditions include standing for extended periods of time, working at heights and overhead and exposure to inclement weather and high voltage electricity. Positions require the ability to be available twenty-four hours a day for emergency response.
Examples of Work:
Coordinates day-to-day operation of the electrician's shop. Schedules work order completion and project completion. Monitors the quality of work performed by electricians and assures timely completion of assigned work. Trains electrical staff including apprentices.
Lays out and estimates the cost of construction projects and maintenance work related to electrical. Installs and maintains electrical switches, cords and outlets; repairs lights, timers, fire/smoke detectors, electrical fixtures, motors and switch gears; installs and maintains electrical fixtures and equipment; diagnoses causes of electrical outages and interruptions; repairs electrical systems.
Installs wiring for the master clock, fire alarm, telephone, computer network and HVAC control systems; installs and maintains wiring for sprinkler control, emergency and exit control lights and associated power control circuits.
Installs and/or removes electrically operated equipment including motors, heaters, lab equipment, welders, light fixtures, power outlets, standby generators and associated switching devices, overhead doors, overhead hoists, circulating/sump/sewage pumps and power control devices.
Maintains and repairs master clock system, fire alarm systems, gas boilers, gas kilns and ovens, kitchen equipment, temperature control system and other electrical appliances.
Installs, modifies, troubleshoots, cleans and repairs elements of the power distribution system.
Assists in the maintenance, repair and computer programming of the HVAC systems.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of and skill in all phases of electrical installation and repair; ability to read, understand and follow blueprints, wiring diagrams, technical instructions, work orders and other instructions and directions; thorough knowledge of local and national electrical codes and standard electrical procedures; knowledge of and skill in the operation of all electrical tools and test equipment used in electrical installation and. repair; ability to operate a for lift, boom and scissor lifts; ability to use ladders safely; ability to drive a van and truck; knowledge of and skill in applying occupational safety precautions and practices; ability to plan work assignments and set priorities; skill in training and monitoring performance of staff, ability to maintain files; ability to prepare budget estimates; ability to work in a participative environment; ability to work independently on assigned tasks with a minimum of technical supervision; ability to communicate effectively verbally; ability to stand for extended periods; ability to work at heights of over 50 feet and overhead; ability to transport ladders, power and hand tools and electrical equipment, such as fixtures and rolls of wire weighing UP to 75 pounds; ability to perform work involving kneeling and bending; ability to work in inclement weather, ability to be available twenty-four hours a day for emergency response; ability to work safely.
Supervision:
Works under the general supervision of the Assistant Director of Facilities Management and Planning. Work is performed independently according to established procedures and applicable state and federal regulations. General instructions as to the scope of work and priorities are provided by the supervisor. Employee is responsible for daily operations with the supervisor available to consult on problems and policy decisions. Work is reviewed periodically during and after completion of work for quality, quantity and safety.
This position coordinates and leads the work of Electrician positions, hourly employees and student assistants. This position plans work, assigns tasks, trains, approves, instructs, sets priorities and is available to answer questions or troubleshoot problems on a daily basis.
Minimum Oualifications:
High school graduation or equivalent is required. Three years of experience at a journey level is required. This experience should include the full range of activities performed by this position as well as responsibility for scheduling and monitoring the completion of projects, ordering supplies and materials and maintaining electrical equipment. A driver's license that is valid in the state of Oregon is required. A current Oregon General Journeyman Electrician License is required. A current State of Oregon general supervisor card is required or the ability to get a general supervisor card in a reasonable amount of time is required.
Equivalent combination of training and experience will be considered qualifying.
