- Lane rides crest of Titanic reversal -The Eugene Register Guard: March 26, 2008
Tyler Bish was disgruntled last fall. He knew his playing time was going to diminish at Irvine Hills Community College and while training at a workout facility near his hometown of San Clemente, Calif., Bish complained and the baseball gods listened. Actually, it just so happened that the ears on the other side of the conversation were those of former Lane Community College baseball assistant coach Erik Korop, who urged the sophomore to join him on a trip to Eugene in late December. “I never really had any plans of actually coming here,” Bish said. “It was more like my mom wanted me to. I never really thought I’d come up here. “The air and the trees are good. I like the rain. It’s kind of like settling." Less than three months after arriving, Bish, a second baseman, leads the Titans in at-bats, hits, runs and RBIs. “He’s been outstanding this year,” Lane coach Rob Strickland said. “I love seeing those types of players take the chance, or the risk, to come up to a new climate and a new type of baseball, as far as the wood bat is concerned. (Coaches) will always enjoy having players who are in that position." A handful of other sophomores, who endured the Titans’ worst season in more than a decade last year, have contributed to the resurgence. Entering today’s Southern Region opener at Clackamas — a doubleheader scheduled for 1 p.m. — Lane is 12-6, the best record in the region and nine wins more than last season’s nonleague record. “Since our preseason last year was so horrible, we’ve taken winning a lot more seriously in the preseason this year,” said sophomore first baseman/pitcher Eric Brown, a Churchill High graduate who has stroked three of the team’s four home runs. “Going from (3)-and-whatever to 12-6 is a huge step. It’s fun for us sophomores to start winning." Lane was 16-32 overall last season, including a fourth-place finish in the Southern Region — the worst in the 12 years Strickland has been apart of the program. The Titans’ 10 consecutive seasons with an appearance in the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges postseason tournament was snapped. “I think it’s definitely hard on everybody, just being on the one team that hasn’t made it in so many years,” said sophomore pitcher Brett Swett, a graduate of Riddle High who is tied for the team lead with three victories. “We definitely don’t want to be that team again this year." Since Lane won the NWAACC and Southern Region championship in 2004, the Titans’ record in the postseason has declined each season, culminating in last season’s debacle. “I think maybe it was that year that happened out of necessity just so that we could refocus on what we have been, what we want to do and which way that we want to go,” said Strickland, in his fifth year at the helm of the program. “Actually, not making the NWAACC tournament last year provided me the opportunity to do a little bit more on the recruiting end, so that we would never put ourselves in that type of position again." Strickland said the team has gained two important variables for this season’s run at the title — talent and depth, a combination as good as he has seen in his tenure at Lane. With that, confidence is a lingering effect of scoring early, which the Titans have to do in order to be successful, Strickland said. “This team has not won a game from behind yet,” he added. “When we jump out on top, we usually stay ahead and win. If we fall behind early, we’ve ended up losing it." Whether it came from unlikely places like southern California or a core of Titans who aren’t willing to relive last season, there is a new energy and focus at Lane — one that is centered on returning to the glory days of gritty, hard-nosed baseball that produced championships.
