2009 H1N1 Influenza Vaccine

www.flu.oregon.gov

November 18 , 2009 Update

We will be holding a final H1N1 vaccine clinic on November 20 from 9-12. There is a sign up sheet in the clinic waiting room. While it is not absolutely necessary to sign up in advance, we cannot guarantee vaccine availability to those who do not sign up. We are still bound by CDC guidelines to provide vaccine only to high priority groups, listed elsewhere.

  • Our flu vaccines are for students and staff of LCC only. Because of the scarcity of vaccine in the community, however, and the extreme risk associated with pregnancy and H1N1, we will make exceptions for pregnant women that have not been able to get vaccinated by their own physician. We will need a note from the OB doctor confirming the patient is pregnant.
  • We do not provide services to anyone under the age of 16.
  • A limited supply of vaccine is available by appointment. Please call to schedule if you are in a high priority group and cannot make it to the vaccination clinic on Nov. 20
  • The clinic schedulers will be setting appointments according to guidelines. It is not appropriate to be uncivil if you are not able to be scheduled, for whatever reason. We are providing this service voluntarily to improve the health and well being of those in our community, but we cannot provide vaccine we do not have, and we are contracted to provide the vaccine according to public health guidelines.
  • Public health authorities are expecting that all who want to be immunized will eventually be able to be vaccinated, but it is extremely important that higher risk individuals receive vaccine first.

Check the Lane County Public Health Department web site to see if you can get the vaccine elsewhere if you feel you must get the vaccine before we receive anymore allotments.

Oregon Public Health Flu Hotline (1-800-978-3040)

The Lane Community College Health Clinic is in communication with state and county public health officials to monitor the H1N1 influenza situation and will respond appropriately.

H1N1 and seasonal influenza are separate and distinct illnesses and will require different vaccinations for prevention. H1N1 influenza is a contagious respiratory disease characterized by high fever, headache, cough, sore throat, aching muscles and joints, nasal congestion and general fatigue, similar to seasonal flu, however H1N1 causes more significant illness in the young, less than 24 years old, and otherwise healthy individual and in pregnancy.

The college will be receiving the H1N1 vaccine when it becomes available from the CDC some time in October of this year. H1N1 shot clinics will be scheduled as soon as vaccine is available. Please return here for further updates.

IF YOU DEVELOP A FEVER AND ANY OF THE OTHER SYMPTOMS LISTED ABOVE YOU ARE ENCOURAGED TO STAY HOME TO PREVENT FURTHER SPREAD OF THIS DISEASE. However, if you are pregnant, or have shortness of breath, decreased urination, or confusion you are encouraged to contact your health care provider.

Do these simple, effective things to protect yourself and others—

  • Wash your hands. Soap and water are best or you can use alcohol-based hand sanitizer products.
  • Cover your cough. Use your elbow or sleeve, or a tissue and then discard it.
  • Don’t touch your eyes, nose or mouth.
  • Stay home if you’re sick. Call ahead before visiting the Lane Health Clinic or your medical practitioner.
  • Get vaccinated.
