Institutional
Capacity: Lane Community College (Lane),
located in Eugene, Oregon, is a comprehensive two-year
public college whose mission is to provide accessible,
high quality, affordable lifelong education. Lane’s district covers nearly 5,000
square miles in western Oregon and reaches from the Pacific
Ocean to the Cascade Mountains (approximately the size of
Connecticut). Lane is Oregon’s second largest community
college with a total FTE of 10,700. In 2003-04, 15,299 students enrolled in credit classes, and 19,095 people enrolled in non-credit classes. The college’s
facilities include a 301-acre campus in southeast Eugene;
outreach centers in downtown Eugene, Florence, Cottage
Grove, the Eugene Airport; as well as Community Learning
Centers at seven area high schools.
Lane has been rated as one of the nation’s top community colleges in
multiple studies over the last 25 years and has received many awards and accolades
for its innovative programs. Our capacity to achieve the objectives of the
proposed project is evidenced by Lane’s:
Leadership: Lane’s reputation for excellence
has earned it membership in the League for Innovation in the Community College.
Since 1973, Lane has been one of only 19 board member colleges in the 700-member
League. The League defines itself as "the only major international organization
specifically committed to improving community colleges through innovation,
experimentation, and institutional transformation." Through the
League, Lane exchanges innovative ideas and practices with some of the
best community colleges in the United States.
| Lane
received the David Pierce Organizational Leadership Award
from the National Institute of Leadership and Institutional
Effectiveness in 1998. |
Commitment to learning: Lane has long been recognized as an emerging
model of the learning college. In 2000, Lane was selected as one of 12 Vanguard
colleges. Vanguard colleges will assist other community colleges in the United
States and Canada to become more learning centered by creating a network of
community colleges strongly committed to the Learning College concept, whose
efforts can serve as a basis for model programs and best practices. Ultimately,
these 12 colleges will serve as incubators and catalysts for the Learning College
concept for other educational institutions around the world.
| The
American Council on Education and the American Association
of Community Colleges cited Lane for excellence in “A
Learning College for the 21st Century” (1997). |
Exemplary record in obtaining and administering
external funds: Activities supported by federal
funds include Lane’s nationally recognized Cooperative
Education program, our Dislocated Worker Program, and Transitions
To Success, Lane’s program for displaced homemakers
and single parents. Other notable grants the college has
received over the past few years include a National Science
Foundation grant to train students in computer simulations
of industrial applications of statistics; five-year, $1,110,000
Student Support Services TRIO grant from the U.S. Department
of Education to provide services for at risk students and
a $300,000 Oregon Economic and Community Development Department
grant to provide training for incumbent health care workers.
| In
2001-2002, Lane received and managed nearly $15 million
in grant and contract funds, excluding federal financial
aid. |
