Getting Started - General Information

What are Distance Learning Courses? These are credit courses that are taught to students who are separated by time and/or space from the instructor. Modes of distance learning course delivery offered by Lane include:

  • Live Interactive Courses - Students enroll in courses and participate either by viewing the class on cable television off campus or by attending in class on campus. Students register for their preferred option. Students must have internet access. Live interactive courses that are delivered live via IP video must be attended in person.

  • Online Courses - courses delivered via the internet. Students must have access to a computer with required hardware and software, an email address, and the internet. Some online courses may have on-campus labs or exams or require viewing accompanying video programs.

  • Telecourses - a coordinated learning system based on a series of videotaped programs, supplemented by printed materials, email, the internet, and supervised by an assigned instructor.

Distance Learning courses follow the same term schedule as classes on campus, but provide convenience and flexibility to students whose family or work responsibilities make it difficult to attend on-campus classes. The distance learning student must be an independent, organized, and self-motivated learner. Study times can be planned at the discretion of the student, but exams and assignments must be completed by assigned due dates. See: "Are distance learning courses for me?"

Is a degree available through distance learning?
Yes! The Associate of Arts Oregon Transfer (AAOT) degree is available through distance learning courses. Individual course listings identify which AAOT degree requirements are met. Significant coursework can also be completed for the Associate of General Studies and Associate of Science degrees. An annual Distance Learning course schedule is available to assist students in planning a flexible course of study.

What shall I do first? (Click here for an online orientation to getting started at Lane.)
Apply for admission online. New students must apply for admission online to get clearance to register and receive an "L" number. Returning students (students who have not registered for classes at Lane during the last four terms) need to reactivate their Expresslane account. All students must obtain an "L" number before registering for classes.

How do I register?
Registration for courses is done using the internet. Register for distance learning courses after receiving your "L" number by using ExpressLane, Lane’s web self-service registration tool. ExpressLane can be accessed from any computer with internet access. Detailed instructions are online: How to Register in ExpressLane. Call Enrollment Services, (541) 463-3100, if you need help.

Can a distance learning course be full?
Yes. Courses do have enrollment limits.  Register for classes as soon as you are allowed.

How much does it cost? (Click here for more information about cost at Lane.)
Tuition for residents of Oregon, California, Idaho, Nevada, and Washington is $75.50 per credit hour. Nonresidents of Oregon pay $260 per credit hour and international students pay $210 per credit hour, plus a $10 per credit international student fee. Telecourses have an additional $25 fee. Online course fees vary. See individual listings for amounts. All students are also charged a $3 per credit technology fee and a transportation fee. Students who are only enrolled in distance learning courses are not charged the ASLCC student activity fee. Students enrolling in credit courses for the first time are charged a $30 one-time fee that pays for placement testing and the degree/certificate application process.

When you register for a class, the charges for tuition and any fees will appear in the “Student Accounts Menu” in ExpressLane. There is no paper bill sent in the mail. You will only receive email notifications of your billing statements. For information about tuition, fees, payments and payment deadlines, please see: lanecc.edu/es/costspymnts.html.

Do I need to buy textbooks?
All distance learning courses require textbooks. Prices vary widely. Textbooks are available for purchase in the main campus bookstore. Distance learning students may call and have texts shipped by using VISA/MasterCard. For information, call the LCC Bookstore, (541) 463-5256.

What if I want a refund?
You are financially and academically responsible for all classes in which you enroll. If you wish to discontinue college attendance you must officially withdraw.

It is your responsibility to drop/withdraw from any class you do not plan to attend. Classes are dropped using ExpressLane. For college policy regarding refunds, see lanecc.edu/es/refunds.html

Students who do not participate in classes during the first week of the term may be dropped from their courses. In order to avoid possible administrative withdrawal:

  • Online course students must log in to the course website during the first week of classes and complete any required assignments due the first week.
  • Telecourse students should turn in a completed blue student information card by the end of the first week of classes. Blue cards are available at the orientation session or at the LCC Bookstore.
  • Live Interactive course students must either attend the course in person, or send an email to the instructor by end of the first week of classes if they are enrolled in the Cable TV section.

Do not assume that the instructor will automatically drop you from their class; it is your responsibility to drop any class you do not plan to attend.

How do I begin my distance learning course?
Distance Learning courses follow the same term schedule as classes on campus. Student enrolled in a Distance Learning course 10 days before the term begins will receive an email from Lane directing them on how to proceed with their distance learning courses. If you register late, please see: www.lanecc.edu/distance/orientations.htm
