Captioned Media

Simply put, captioning is the text version of the spoken word. We strongly recommend that faculty use captioned or subtitled media so that students can have direct, visual access to the information. While captioning is primarily intended for those who cannot hear the audio, research has determined that it also benefits many who can hear. This includes those who may not be fluent in the language in which the audio is presented and individuals with learning or reading difficulties.

If captioned videos are listed as an approved accommodation on the student's Letter of Accommodation, you will need to provide the student the opportunity to view the video with captions. If you don't know if the video you plan to show has captions, you can look for “Subtitles”, “Captioned” or the CC symbol on the label.

If the video is captioned, contact AV Services at (541) 463-5370 to be sure that the TV/VCR/MultiMedia Projector unit in the classroom is set-up to display captions. If the TV/VCR combination is old, you may need to request a different brand be placed in the room, so the captioning feature will be available for the student who needs it.

If the video is NOT captioned, then you have a few options:

1. You can contact the library and ask them to help you find a captioned copy.

2. You can call local video stores (Blockbuster, Hollywood, or Flicks-n-Picks, etc.) to see if they have a captioned copy available to rent.

3. As a last resort, Disability Resources can have your video transcribed, so the student will have access to the auditory information contained in the video.

• If the student is using an in-class service provider (interpreter or computer notetaker) from Disability Resources, this person can provide limited access to the media; however, the student may miss information. It's nearly impossible to watch an interpreter and a video, or watch a computer screen and a video simultaneously.

• Offering the Service Provider an opportunity to preview the video is always appreciated.
