alternative pointing devices (head pointer, trackballs, etc.), talking language

Disability Services staff person about the technology options that may work for
you
Notetaking Services
You must have this accommodation indicated on your Potential Accommodations
Form before you receive this accommodation. Disability Services notetakers are
all volunteers. A variety of services are available to students who need
assistance in taking class notes. Students work with their Disability Services
counselors to select the method that will best serve their needs as well as
allow them to be the most independent. You may wish to read the brochures
entitled, "Notetaking Tips", and "How to Find and Keep a
Volunteer Notetaker".
Disability Services may
qualify a student, with certain disabling conditions, for an in-class Service
Provider who will take notes during class and provide them in an alternative
format (on disk, enlarged, Brailled, etc.)
Remember: You are to take notes also, to the best of
your ability.
NCR Paper:
NCR (No Carbon Required) paper is a special notetaking paper that does not need
any carbon paper. A volunteer classmate takes notes for you, and then gives you
the copies at the end of class. NCR paper in packets of 25 sheets are available
upon request from the DS office.
Photocopy Machine:
A free photocopy machine is located in Disability Services (Student Services,
building 1, room 218). You can copy lecture notes from your volunteer
notetaker. There is a clipboard with a sign-in sheet where you are to note how
many copies are made. Copy lecture notes only! No books, class assignments,
personal work, or school organization / club work. You must be present when all
copies are being made, and may be asked to show material you wish to copy.
Please don't send your classmate in alone. The copier is located inside the DS
office. Please ask for help your first time.
Computer Notetaking:
Disability Services offers two different types of computer
assisted notetaking for students with qualifying disabilities:
Tape Record Lectures:

Audiocassette recorders are available on loan to tape
lectures and class discussions. NOTE: This accommodation is not appropriate for
all classes, especially those where a lot of personal information is shared. In
this case, discuss your needs with the instructor, and consider specifically
what you need to have recorded. Some instructors will allow tape recording of
lectures, if the recorder is turned off when requested, like when someone is
about to share something private they would prefer not be taped
Alternate Format:
Students requiring their textbooks or other materials in an
alternate format (enlargements, e-text, recorded on tape) should work closely
with Lynn Lodge, our Alternate Format Specialist 463-3323, to determine their
specific accommodation needs each term. Materials take time to reproduce for
accessibility. Please notify Disability Services at least three to four weeks
before the start of the term if you will need class materials in an alternate
format, so we have time to find out exactly what you'll need and when. If you
participate in Advance
Registration, you can request accommodations as soon as you have confirmed
your classes. Text on
Tape:
If you qualify for Text on Tape (which includes textbooks, packets, handouts
and tests) we ask that you submit a completed application to the Oregon State
Library's Talking Book and Braille Services. This application can qualify the
student for an extended loan of a 4-Track tape player. This is necessary
because all tapes provided by Oregon State Library's Taking Book and Braille
Services, Recordings for the Blind and
Dyslexic, and Disability Services are recorded in a 4-Track format. If you
think you may qualify for this service, you can go to the
Oregon State Library's Taking
Book and Braille Services website, or ask Disability Services for an
application.
If you qualify for Test Accommodations, a Test
Accommodation Instruction form will accompany your Letters of Accommodation.
Your instructor will need to indicate on the Test Accommodation Instruction
form which accommodations he or she will need DS to provide, and return the
form to DS with a copy of the class calendar. It is the student's
responsibility to remind the instructor to complete this form and return it to
DS. If your instructor can provide your accommodations - GREAT! Please notify
DS at least two-weeks in advance of test accommodation needs, so we have time
to make arrangements to pick-up and deliver the test, arrange for assistants,
and a room. We cannot guarantee testing accommodations requested in less than
the two-week time limit.
Possible test accommodations include the following:
- Scribe (someone to write for you)
- Reader
- Word Processor or Computer Access
- Extended Time (time-and-a-half, double-time)
- Distraction Free
- Earplugs
- Music thru earphones
Sign language and oral interpreters are available to assist
students with hearing impairments in both credit and non-credit college courses
and related activities such as instructor conferences and meetings with other
college staff. Qualifying students will need to sign a Student-Interpreter
Services Agreement, and follow the rules included therein
In class service providers (readers, scribes, aides, etc.)
will be provided to qualifying students upon request. Students should allow at
least 1-2 weeks advance notice of needs to give the Disability Services staff
time to locate an appropriate service provider.
