Occupational Skills Program
Student Information

The Occupational Skills Program (OSP) is a one year certificate program that provides an individualized course of study for occupations not available through present Lane Community College certificate or degree programs. The Occupational Skills Program is open to all students seeking to obtain job skills in specialized career paths. Participating students are eligible for financial aid.

Most occupational goals can be met, providing it meets the following criteria:

  1. There is a current labor market need for the job being sought, and
  2. there is an appropriate internship site available in the community.

Upon entering the Occupational Skills Program each student will work with the OSP staff to develop an educational career goal and an individualized education plan. The program is open-entry/open-exit (students can start at any time in the term) to maximize educational opportunities. Instruction is a combination of classroom-based and work-site education/training (the internship).

Every student must complete the College’s general education requirements which include:

  • Writing 115 or equivalent
  • Math 25 or higher
  • Human Relations at Work.

In addition, individual education plans will include specific occupation-related courses, and a cooperative education internship (“hands-on” experience in the field) in order to receive the certificate.

Here is a sample educational plan:

Intro to Writing (WR 115) or Intro to College Writing (WR 115W) 4 credits
Basic Math Applications (MTH 025) Or higher 3 credits
Human Relations at Work (HD 203) 3 credits
Occupational specific courses 9-15 credits
Cooperative Education (internship) 20-26 credits

Students are required to take placement tests to determine skill level and readiness in math, reading, and writing. Students must begin with courses within their skill level as determined by the placement test scores.
