University of Oregon Overview

The U of O's Department of Computer and Information Science (CIS) offers Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees. With careful planning, students can take two years of coursework at Lane which will transfer to the U of O. The following information applies to Lane students who plan to transfer to the University of Oregon to major in Computer and Information Science. Students interested in this or any other Lane CIT program should speak with a counselor or advisor for specific requirements and other important information.

The CIS Department also offers a CIS minor program and CIT minor program for students who major in another field. Students who want to minor in CIS or CIT should contact the CIS Department for more information about specific minor requirements.

PREPARATION
Transfer students from two-year colleges should attempt to complete as many of the general education requirements as possible before they transfer to the University. Transfer courses can satisfy requirements in:

  1. U of O General Education Requirements.
    These include English Composition and courses in Arts and Letters and Social Science. They are described in the "General Education Requirements" handout available from the Lane Counseling and Advising Center CIS-required mathematics (graded basis) and science courses.
     
  2. Introductory CIS courses (graded basis)

MAJOR REQUIREMENTS
Fifty-four credits in CIS courses.
At least 40 credits must be upper-division (i.e., courses numbered 300 and above). Questions about whether specific Lane courses transfer as CIS credits to the University should be referred to an advisor in the CIS Department (phone 346-4408). Ten specific CIS courses are required: CIS 210, 211, 212, CIS 213 (Introduction to Data Structures), CIS 314 (Computer Organization), CIS 315 (Algorithms), CIS 323 (Data Structures Lab), CIS 415 (Operating Systems), CIS 422 (Software Methodology), and CIS 425 (Survey of Programming Languages. In addition, 16 credits of upper division CIS electives are required.

MATHEMATICS
Transfer students are advised to take college mathematics through three terms of Calculus (Mth 251, 252, 253) at Lane, Including any calculus preparatory work (Mth 111 and Mth 112, if not taken in high school). The CIS Department also requires a one-year sequence in Discrete Mathematics (Mth 231, 232, and 233). Note that Math 231 and 232 are prerequisites to CIS 313 and 323. In addition, 8 credits of upper division math electives are required.

TECHNICAL WRITING
CIS majors must take either WR320 (Scientific Writing), or WR321 (Business Communications).

SCIENCE
CIS majors must take a science sequence selected from among the following: physics, chemistry, botany, zoology, or psychology (experimental or physiological).

GRADING POLICIES
CIS Core courses (210, 211, 212, 313, 314, 315, 323, 415, 422, and 425) and Math Core Courses (251, 252, 253, and 231, 232, 233 or 271, 272 plus a course in probability or statistics): These courses must be taken for a letter grade.* A grade of C- or better. Other course may be taken grades or P/NP.

*Exception: CIS323 is a core course but is offered P/NP only.
