Chinese, Mandarin 1st 

Learn basic Chinese language for practical use; obtain overview of culture and history of China. Practice exercises in student pairs: greetings, introductions, date and time, counting, and family structures. Instructor uses Pinyin, the western (Roman) alphabet, to transcribe sounds of Mandarin. 

Chinese, Mandarin 2nd 

Build on vocabulary and other language elements from first-term Chinese. Engage in elementary dialogue in student pairs: date and time; hobbies, visiting friends; making appointments.
