Emergency Medical Technician Intermediate (EMT-I) Course

Oregon implemented a new curriculum for EMT-Intermediate certification. The new 144 hour curriculum (released by the Department of Human Services, Office of Public Health Systems EMS & Trauma November 28, 2005) includes 78 lecture hours, 54 lab hours, as well as an 8-hour clinical experience with 20 patient contacts.

The EMT-Intermediate course is offered through the Continuing Education Department at Lane Community College.This course is a two term course Fall and Winter term. The clinicals are done during the Winter term. Coursework includes: venipuncture, administration of IV fluids, medication administration, intraosseous infusion skills, defibrillation skills and intermediate cardiac arrest skills. Upon successful completion of the course, students are eligible to apply to take the EMT-Intermediate state certification examination. Program Information

The cost of the program is approximately $1500. Textbooks and testing fees are an additional cost.

Special Requirements

To work in Oregon, Emergency Medical Technicians must be certified. Applicants for certification must have completed high school or GED; be at least 18 years of age; be physically and mentally qualified to perform duties; and must be free from alcohol and drugs. Conditions adversely affecting potential employment include a poor driving record and/or a criminal background and should be taken into consideration before applying to the EMT-I course. EMT-I course participants are required to submit to a criminal background check prior to their 8-hour clinical field observation. Because of the risk of exposure to infections disease, all EMT program participants are required to complete and provide proof of immunization and other health screening data.

Application Requirements

A passing score of 80 percent on the EMT-I entrance exam is required. This multiple choice written exam covers knowledge of the EMT-Basic curriculum and is administered by the Continuing Education Department at the Downtown Center, 1059 Willamette Street, Eugene.  Dates for this testing is yet to be determined.  Watch this web page for more information

A student must submit proof of the following to be eligible to apply:

• Current Oregon driver's license
• Oregon EMT-Basic certification
• American Heart Association Level C or American Red Cross Basic Life Support for the Professional Rescuer CPR card
• Agency sponsor/physician advisor letter (Provides written verification of competency in certain Basic skills)

How to Apply

To become an EMT-I student you must meet the admission requirements, provide necessary documentation, and be accepted. Admission is based on a "first-qualified, first-admitted" basis as long as space is available. Note: A submitted application implies interest only. EMT-I students must be accepted into the course. Attendance at the first class is mandatory. No exceptions. Students missing the first class will be dropped from the roster by the department.
