Co-op Education: Real Estate Cooperative Work Experience (CWE)

Real Estate cooperative work experience (CWE) is offered through the Cooperative Education (Co-op Ed) program at Lane Community College . A real estate Co-op is an on-the-job student work experience  for those real estate students seeking real-world exposure to professional real estate prior to being licensed. The typical CWE placement is 3 credits per term which equals 108 hours of work, an average of 10 hours per week. The student pays tuition to Lane Community College for a three credit course, and is placed with a local real estate brokerage firm, real estate appraisal firm or other firm providing real estate oriented services.

When Should I Take It?

The cooperative work experience is most valuable near the end of your real estate coursework, and after completing Real Estate Law, Real Estate Finance and Real Estate Practices.

What will I Experience?

The CWE is tailor-made to the student's professional interests. During the course of a real estate brokerage work experience, you may be exposed to and gain experience with the following real estate areas:

  • Listing appointments
  • Showing appointments
  • Offer presentations
  • Property showings
  • Escrow closings
  • Preparing the open house
  • Marketing and solicitation
  • Physical inspection of homes

These activities become part of the learning goals for the student.

When Does The Cooperative Work Experience (CWE) Start?

An cooperative work experience (CWE) normally starts at the beginning of each term. The Co-op Ed student normally works on-the-job approximately 10 hours per week in 3 or 4 hour segments. Co-op students have meaningful assignments to complete during the term.

What's In It For Me?

A Co-op Ed work experience is an excellent way to get your foot in the door with a local employer. It opens up networking opportunities and provides a local reference for job hunting upon completion of the real estate program.
