LCC President Mary SpildeBrighter futures ahead

—By Mary Spilde, President

Summer's here at last, bringing sunnier days and brighter futures to students at Lane Community College.

It's an especially good time for dislocated workers, thanks to the Walmart Brighter Futures Project.

This project provides resources, information, and support for dislocated workers in an accessible, friendly setting. There are a variety of workshops, career coaching and guidance in a group setting, handson assessment tools, and access to a computer lab.

You may not be sure where you're going when you get here, but you'll leave with a career map. The map will include your short-term and long-term goals, timelines, budgets and resource options, plus steps for skills enhancement.

All participants in the project work towards the National Career Readiness Certificate. This is a nationally recognized credential that proves your basic skill competency in reading, math, and locating information.

Our combination of high-tech, timely services with a supportive structure really helps people get the competitive edge they need to be successful in today's challenging economy and market. For many, the experience is transformational.

The Walmart Brighter Futures Project is funded by a grant from the League for Innovation in the Community College and the Walmart Foundation.

Lane is one of only eight community colleges in the country selected for the project.

So here’s the forecast: brighter days ahead.
